Just was in Europe (middle to end of March) for a few weeks primarily to go snowboarding/partying in the French Alps (Val Thorens), but did spend some time in the Netherlands and will provide my insight as the information seems to be scant for whatever reason. The information that is out there, seems to be mostly negative. To the contrary of most people, I really enjoyed the Netherlands, and Amsterdam in particular. It was 5 of us total for most of the trip (4 Canadians and myself an American), and then I did a solo weekend in Amsterdam at the end. My friend lives in Groningen, so we all met in Amsterdam for a long weekend of partying to start the trip off and then went to Groningen for a Monday and Tuesday night before taking off for France and hitting the Alps.
I'll start with the little info on Groningen I can provide...
Groningen- We were really only going to check out our buddies place for a couple mellow days before hitting the slopes. Rolling with the 4 Canucks and myself, nothing was going to be mellow. Really only spent one day in town, so far from the expert here. It's a really nice little city which completely revolves around the University. Tons of students everywhere, some nice shops and good restauarants, and seemed to feel like a pretty clean place. The place was slightly bigger than I expected, as I did not think they would have the likes of a Hugo Boss store, amongst other designer brands. We rolled in on a Monday into Groningen, went to dinner and then we wanted to go out and check out the nightlife if there was any to be found on a Monday night. Popped into his usual places which were dead, and then we stumbled across one little bar which had some people inside of it, but more importantly some seemed to be young college chicks. This place is still dead by most standards, with maybe 25 people total. We are hanging inside drinking a few beers and chatting up a couple young cute chicks who were wasted and dressed in these weird onesie animal outfits for some reason I never quite understood. The chicks were all super friendly and we were having some good laughs with them, but they were pretty consumed with their little costume event thing going on.
Outside was a mixed group of 2-3 girls, and 2-3 young college aged dudes. One of my friends was outside smoking and chatted it up with them and then we came out. They had some stupid board game thing going which was lame, but I played anyways as that's what the girls were all doing so why not participate? One of the dudes was a young tall kid, fake diamond earrings, kinda wannabe hip-hop kid/pretty boy and super curious about why we were there, etc. He was trying to be friendly, but at the same time he was kind of acting like an asshole, albeit unintentionally. His friend was super wasted and was a total fucking retard. One of our buddies in the group is definitely not the alpha type, and this kid tapped him on the forehead trying to show him something as if he was knocking on a door. Don't remember what stupid shit it was over, but my friend didn't say anything and it bothered the fuck out of me so I had to check the kid and put him in his place by grabbing him and telling to chill the fuck out. He still was rambling a bit drunk, not talking shit, but just being dumb. If he wasn't so twiggy and his boy hadn't really tried to tell him to shut the fuck up and help him save him getting his ass beat, he was asking for a KO.
Cant tell you all the details, but I remember playing the board game and the chick next to me started to give me some long stares as I was flirting a bit with her and at the same time clowning the one drunk idiot guy. I could tell she wanted it. My buddy who lives there has a pretty pimp place and had already left (11PM or so) as he had work the next morning. Well, we decided to invite the chicks back to his pad for an after party or course selling them on his pimp place and we have lots of booze (total lie as we had a tiny bit of vodka and ended up cracking open some nice bottles of wine my boy had). Back at the house now and "my" girl was the cutest one by far of the three there. Me and one of my buddies ended up each trying to game her and we were going back and forth with each other. We had to get up at 5AM on Wed morning, so Tuesday night wasn't a big one. Hit another bar though and the buzz was totally different from Monday for the better. Genius and not very common to see that where its handed to you so naturally to be in a position to touch and escalate during dinner. Pizza, salad, app and bottle of red. 68 euros. Upscale decor, but no need for a suit here although you wouldn't stand out.
5&33- Modern joint in a hotel. Overpriced for food but the bar area has a DJ on weekends and has some life, good for drinks. Don't go for the food really unless snacking only. Not the best setup to bring a chick, but my date liked it because it was super modern and nice. I found it be too much like a wannabe W hotel.
Momo- High end lounge and sushi joint.. Good cocktails, 14-16 euros each. Had some chicks at the bar also. Supposed to be great sushi but didn't eat there.
Gartine- Tucked off a little side street but great reviews and intimate. Walked in at 4pm on a Sunday and they couldn't seat me as reservations had the place booked. MUST be good to be booked like that starting at 4.
Caffe Espirit- Close to Gartine and casual yet trendy lunch/brunch place. Great sandwiches (8-9 euros) and trendy place. Gets busy.
Cake Cafe (No name cafe)- This place literally has no name and is REALLY good. I'm calling it Cake Cafe as the receipt was charged as that. Ask the waiter the name and they say "We dont have one". Great for breakfast and brunch, fresh juices. This place is a must for breakfast. Wolvenstraat 23. Ate there on multiple occasions
RED, Mata Hair, Baut- All recommended to me by someone reputable as trendy cool places but didn't go personally.
Drinks:
***Key note*** Per the girl who I ended up banging, Sunday and Monday nights are the best in Amsterdam apparently because no tourists are out and places start at 9:30 and go until 1 only. She told me that's when the best looking crowd goes out.
Paladium- Next to Buddha bar and had good food as well when we ate some light food there. This is the place to pregame and eat dinner and roll into the night. Lots of groups of girls in there at the bar and at tables before 11. Then it turns almost into a club by about 11-12. Cant move though and its super crowded then but you will bump into chicks easily just because its so packed. Holding a spot at the bar is the move. Can smoke inside. Pulled a really cute blonde girl out of here who I still keep in touch with but couldn't isolate from her friends fully that night.
The Butcher shop- Nice hamburger joint out front and then a secret back door you have to be on the list for in back by pressing the buzzer. 15 euro cocktails but VERY good drinks. Buddha bar- Buddha Bars are all over the world as many of you probably know. Restaurant but then turns into a club and goes off. Right next door to Paladium so can bounce between the two. I'm sure there are trendier places but it works for what it is. We popped bottles there one night and I woke up with #'s in my phone and dont remember much.
Jimmy Woo's- Hottest spot in Amsterdam along with Chicago Social House next door according to all the night owls who I quizzed about the best spots. Met one of the hottest girls of my life in there who was half Dutch/Brazilian. Fucking out of this world. Had her going also but she had a boyfriend and wouldn't budge on giving me any info because she was with him. He played semi-pro soccer is what she told me. Lucky, lucky man he is. I think we went on a Friday night but not sure. Sunday night is there best night I was told.
Chicago Social House- One of the hottest clubs in the city currently according to more than one person. Had a bunch of chicks going in but we ended up next door at Jimmy Woo's. May have gone here also but not sure as the night was a blur.
Janet Wong's- Bar/ lounge across from Jimmy Woo's where everyone goes first to pregame. Real nice place and I could see it having some talent. I was there on a Sunday night though only and it was perfectly low key for having a couple drinks with the girl I was with.
Abe- I didn't go but this chick with credibility said its brand new and has a good party on Mondays.

Het Paardje- Patio over by The Butcher where we went day drinking after stumbling upon it by accident while riding bikes. Place was packed with everyone sitting outside at tables and standing around at the door. All locals and no tourists. Had lots of chicks there but we were kind of insular in hanging with me and my friends rather than hard chasing. Higher end scene. When the weather is good on a weekend, definitely go during the day. Should be able to pull something for the night from there.
