In the process of planning a 5th trip to Thailand towards the end of the year. Is it just the shitty Australian Dollar playing tricks on me, or is the place getting rather expensive for what it is?

The bhat is really strong atm. I remember when I came here in 2017 I was essentially paying 30% more than the previous year due to the less favourable exchange rate.
Still not really that expensive. Taxis are dirt cheap, 50 tbh should get you a decent Thai meal, etc. Your biggest expense will likely be accomodation. Get a place a little further out from the center and costs go way down.
