Differences between male and female brains

http://www.scientificamerican.com/articl...than-women

"The research, which involved imaging the brains of nearly 1,000 adolescents, found that male brains had more connections within hemispheres, whereas female brains were more connected between hemispheres. The results, which apply to the population as a whole and not individuals, suggest that male brains may be optimized for motor skills, and female brains may be optimized for combining analytical and intuitive thinking."

what are these sorts of studies supposed to accomplish? I don't understand? Is this going to help cure cancer? Help us live longer lives? Understand what consciousness is? Or is this just so some PhDs can get grant money to study something stupid?

The pursuit of knowledge is one of the best things for mankind to spend money on.

Understanding the brain better is fascinating. Really scientists have a lot left to learn about how the brain functions.

Why does studying the brain make you upset? Studying the functioning of the human brain isn't "something stupid" it's one of the most fascinating things out there. How do we think? How does our mind function? How do our minds differ from the minds of others?

I can't imagine how you expect scientists to help cure cancer and help people live longer without understanding our minds and bodies.

Differences between male and female brains

Came across this column in the NYT.

Y Chromosome Depends On Itself To Survive

A quote from MIT biology professor David Page:

Quote:Quote:

Men and women differ by 1 to 2 percent of their genomes, Dr. Page said, which is the same as the difference between a man and a male chimpanzee or between a woman and a female chimpanzee

According to feminist logic, any difference discernible between this chimp

and Elon Musk

is a social construct.

Wrong interpretation of results.

Wat this means that men can separate abstract from real and personal from objective. Women can not, everything is personal for them and there is no motivation to thing abstract thoughts if there is no immediate practical and selfish benefit.

I don't disagree, but how did you infer the one from the other? What is the specific causality between brain connection pattern and the abstract/real and personal/objective distinctions?

Well it's common knowledge that left hemisphere is about abstract thinking like math and right hemisphere is about feelings and art.

In life we don't really observe that women are smarter by combining art with math, men do innovation by combination more. What we observe however is that women are easily offended and take everything personal.

I would suggest that separation between hemispheres might be a good thing and in fact is more advantageous then having it all together.

The simpler the organism the more universal his organs, the more advanced the organism the more well defined and specialized its organs.

Just my theory based on experiance.

I agree with your observations, but the fact that women are less innovative can be explained by other things, e.g. distracted by crazy monthly hormonal cycles. The brain connection difference seems to be a correlation, not necessarily a causation. Disclaimer: I have not read the article yet; perhaps the authors address this.

I'm in favor of this type of research. Maybe we'll develop a pill or therapy that increases connections both between and among hemispheres to get the best of both worlds. "Take your vitamin Z pills while pregnant so Johnny's UltraBrain grows better"

edit: it's a short article, quick read. Much more detail than we've been discussing here. It has some SJW statements along the line of people can have both male and female patterns in their brains. It briefly mentions that the intra-hemisphere linkage may correlate with autism, since that affects primarily males. It distinguishes between front and back of the brain as well.
