Is our academic system a fraud?
03-17-2019, 02:22 AM
I spent 4 years at a top university and graduated with honors, followed by a well-paying career. I am qualified to say that yes, it's a fraud in many ways such as:
1. It is driven by people making socially acceptable decisions about the future of their kids, rather than actually doing research to find out about other avenues to future employment.
2. It teaches you how to do your job (sometimes), but not enough to question the greater picture, such as critically analyzing your job/industry and what's wrong with them.
3. It is inherently anti-male due to the nature of having your future decided by academic authority figures (aka professors). Sometimes they expect you to do stupid, useless shit just to earn an A, and you can either obey and get an A or complain and risk a lower grade.
4. Most people teaching you don't know much about how the world works beyond their little area of their expertise. Reading RVF is a far more educational experience about the world than the typical academic program.
5. Academic outcomes such as grades and papers are a poor measure of actual ability to get things done in real life.
I could go on and on...
