Final proof that obesity epidemic is only due to eating habits

Quote:ABC news on Yahoo Wrote:

64-Year-Old Man Has Eaten 12,000 Big Macs in 30 Years

Dennis Rosenlof has special sauce coursing through his veins.

"My first meal of the day is always at about 10:30, when they open up the Big Macs," Rosenlof, 64, told ABC News.

The fast-food giant McDonald's can keep its Egg McMuffins, Filets-O-Fish and all the rest of it. Rosenlof said he isn't interested.

"I enjoy what I eat," he said. "It tastes good, so I order the same thing every day."

And for Rosenlof, that's a Big Mac meal. The electrical appliance salesman and Vietnam vet is apparently in great health, despite being a self-confessed Big Mac-aholic with a 30-year habit.

"Mondays I always eat a Big Mac, two on Tuesdays, one on Wednesdays, two on Thursdays, one or two on Fridays, and two every Saturday," he explained.

That is 10 Big Macs a week. Rosenlof estimates he's scarfed down more than 12,000 of the special sauce-covered burgers in a lifetime.

He eats almost nothing else, except on the day of rest.

"Sunday my wife cooks meals and we eat a family dinner, so it works out great," said Rosenlof.

But health professionals recognize the vital nutrients he is not getting.

"What's missing from his diet it seems are vitamins, minerals, fiber," said ABC News Nutrition and Wellness Editor Dave Zinczenko. "The good news is he's keeping his calories in check, 700 fewer calories than the average American man brings in."

He just eats them all in Big Macs.

"It has all the major food groups in it," Rosenlof said. "I'm not sure what's in the special sauce, but you put them all together and it makes a fantastic sandwich."

One would imagine a man subsisting only on Big Macs to be not only vitamin and fiber deficient, but also morbidly obese. But nope, he is perfectly normal. Have a look:

Final proof that obesity is only due to how many calories you stuff yourself with (and what you eat that allows you to stuff yourself easily, but it's still about total calorie intake vs. consumption).

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.

The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.

Final proof that obesity epidemic is only due to eating habits

Ya'all are missing a few things here.

There is a difference between a diet and a dietary lifestyle.

A diet is a temporary thing designed to temporarily starve your body so you lose excess weight. Anyone can eat any kind of crap or junk food at caloric deficit levels and "lose weight." Duh. This was proved long ago by concentration camps and medieval dungeons. Starvation leads to weight loss.

But no diet based on a caloric deficit can last for long. Which then leads to the temporarily restricted diet ending, and the weight returning when old dietary habits are resumed. Thus, "Yo Yo dieting."

Finally, weight is hardly the be all-end all of a healthy diet. If this guy is ONLY eating Big Mac's at McDonald's and not eating the french fries nor drinking the soda's, I'm not surprised at all that he's done so for years and not become overweight. Hell, too many people always blame the "red meat" and "greasy burgers" of fast food for the obesity epidemic, when the more influential factor IMO has more to do with the super-sizing of the soybean oil french fries and high fructose corn soda more than the hamburger itself.

But don't be surprised if he experiences health problems down the road after eating such crap for decades.

Big Mac's most likely contain MSG, soybean oil in the special sauce, as well as the refined, white flour bun made with partially hydrogenated, roundup-ready soybean oil aka margarine. A lifetime of ingesting that crap will eventually catchup to him, overweight or not.

The guy eats ONLY one or two Big Macs, six days a week. Repeat, that's ALL he eats for the day. Of course he's not overweight, you don't blow up like a balloon on a small quantity of poor quality food.

I don't disagree with the basic idea that this guy set out to prove but he's still an idiot.

First of all, leave it to America to employ an overweight guy as a nutrition professor.

"I'm not geared to say this is a good thing to do," he said. "I'm stuck in the middle. I guess that's the frustrating part. I can't give a concrete answer. There's not enough information to do that."

What? There's not enough information to decide whether eating nothing but processed snack cakes is a good idea? Remember, this is coming from a NUTRITION PROFESSOR.

Before his Twinkie diet, he tried to eat a healthy diet that included whole grains, dietary fiber, berries and bananas, vegetables and occasional treats like pizza.

"There seems to be a disconnect between eating healthy and being healthy," Haub said. "It may not be the same. I was eating healthier, but I wasn't healthy. I was eating too much."

------------------------

On August 25, Haub, 41, started his cake diet focusing on portion control. "I'm eating to the point of need and pushing the plate or wrapper away," he said.

This sums it up quite well. He gorged himself with healthy foods because he's a fat ass. Then, he completely switched his food choices while simultaneously changing his portion sizes. What kind of scientific method is that?

Then he tries to blame it on the healthy food. This is just a fat guy rationalizing ways to eat more twinkies. Remember, nutrition professor.

Like I said, I don't disagree with the premise he TRIES to prove. Operating at a caloric deficit is the key to losing weight. That being said, the guys in these two articles are starving themselves just because they're so hooked on junk. The shit is like crack to fatties.

I went to a university that had a decent food science and nutrition program. The bulk of what I learned about nutrition from Flex Magazine other bodybuilding magazines was equal to or greater than what they taught in their university level courses.

It was pretty much a fucking joke.

This is the exact reason why I discount most nutrition advice I hear in the mainstream media.

Also, much of the shit mcdonalds sells is the frys and drinks. The dude who eats only big macs eats ONLY big macs. Don't eat mcdonalds fries if you go there(or any fast food joint for that matter)

Most nutrition "experts" believe that red meat is bad and "healthy whole grains" are good. Most nutritionists are also pre-diabetic pieces of shit.

Also, Big Macs suck, way too much bread and hardly any meat. Double quarter pounders are pretty decent though.

Even healthy food is cooked in oil, which is fattening. No such thing as "good" fat. Always use cooking spray when you can.

Also, too many people don't realize how much sugar is in juice, how mayo triples the calories in a sandwich, how much butter is used in "healthy" dishes.

the sugar in orange juice, for example, is fruit sugar and not as bad as refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is totally artificial and very difficult for the body to digest.and yeah, butter is disgusting.

Fat is healthy, as is protein. Carbs are not essential for life and cause problems in higher doses, like diabetes, alzheimers, cancer, and obesity.

A Big Mac is high in calories from mainly the sauce and the bread. There's 3.4 ounces of (not high grade but okay quality) meat - each patty is 1.6oz. Each of those patties is 90 calories. The single slice of cheese on the Big Mac is 50 calories. That leaves roughly 240 calories for the bun, and 80 calories for the sauce; a Big Mac with sauce is 550 calories, while a Big Mac with no sauce is 470.

The biggest knock that fast food has going for it is that it's almost universally high in sodium. Other than that, you're basically talking about middling quality bread and meat, and whatever sauce goes on it. That, and the high accessorization rate of fries + caloric soda - a Big Mac by itself is only 550 calories, but tack on a medium soda (250 calories) and a medium fry (380) calories and you've more than doubled the meal's calorie content. Carbs aren't as strong in satiation terms as protein/fat combinations, so it's easier to overeat.

I actually lost a lot of weight on fast food by using it to mitigate portion size, similar to Prof. Haub. I ate pretty extensively from the dollar menu and kept track of my intake, and ended up dropping about 1.5 pounds a week.

Two Big Macs a day, while relatively expensive at $4 a pop, is 1100 calories. The man eats like a bird.

Where does it say he only eats Big Macs? The video on aol morning rush shows him eating french fries.

How certain is nutritional science about what's healthy or not over the long term anyways? The human body is so complex that you would need to test a controlled diet over decades to see its effects, which is exactly what Rosenlof did.

Everyone has a different metabolism and body makeup. Eating well is a huge piece of the puzzle but it's not everything. All you naysayers on that point take a science class. Sure, this guy is skinny, but the REAL question is, is he healthy? McDonalds doesn't serve food, it serves food products. He's eating a bit of nasty, hormone/antibiotic beef, a bunch of genetically modified soy and corn, and a shit load of chemicals daily.

And to the person who said there's no such thing as a "good" fat....hahah, read a goddamn book. You would die without fat, not to mention cholesterol. Olive oil is insanely good for you Read the ingredient list on your spray bottle of Pam or whatever shitty spray you use.

People talk about diets like its the be all end all of weight loss.

These people need to get off their sedentary asses and hit the gym. A diet will help you lose weight slowly, exercise will help give you more toned muscle.

People are lazy slobs.

Saturated fats are very good for you (within reason). They help maintain hormone levels in the body.

I would stick to pure whole foods that don't advertise (low/no fat, low/no sugar, etc etc). Whatever they substituted in to maintain the flavor isn't healthy for you in the slightest.

I cook with pure butter, whole milk, and olive oil all the time. Shit tastes better 8)

While it is definitely better to eat healthy* foods - both because they are healthy and have less energy density so it's harder to overeat, never forget that the only rule of weight loss or gain is this:

Calorie intake < Law of mass conservation

Unless you're a walking fission reactor, you can't produce either mass or calories out of thin air.

* among with protein, fruits and vegetables (possibly some whole grains), that does include butter and all sorts of non-hydrogenated fats, within reason of course.

A great point that is often overlooked. It's a simple matter of having a slight caloric deficit, that will normally halp the weight come off unless there is an underlying medical condition that is causing the weight gain.
