I think the results are biased because it can more acceptable to say you don't like other ethnic groups in some countries and the poll did not consider that.

I've been hooking up with this indian girl and i find her racism hilarious.

It's absolutely the most hilarious thing to see. She's so unabashed about it, it kills me.

1st generation. Parents are fresh off the boat along with her. I won't lie it's kind of funny watching an indian girl go, "Ugh too much color in this neighborhood."

I don't think she uses it to place judgement on others, but honestly I don't know.

From what I read the numbers are from the question -
Are you ok if someone from another race moves in next to you?

This is a completely useless poll with a very misleading headline.

It's more like a map on the degree of Political Correctness.

Any place or person that claims to be so tolerant usually isn't. Why would you have to defend being open minded and tell everyone about it? Reminds me of people from Portland or Austin who claim to be so loving and liberal yet are living in 90% white neighborhoods on top of being in white cities and are scared to drive on the wrong side of the tracks.

There's a lot of racism in America but most people wont directly say shit to anyone's face. They might try to make a slick comment and play it off if the person gets pissed.

They may be trolls, but they're honest trolls. Not going to lie, I've always had a hard time adjusting to American level of PC after being brought up in a family where everyone gave their honest opinion (the amount of times my aunts have straight up told me to cut my hair or shave my beard is hilarious).

Couple problems with this:

1. Social desirability bias, as others said. People may just be trained to deny that they are racist.

2. Local outsider quality. Imagine if you lived in a homogenous society, and the few outsiders among you were disloyal and/or disproportionately violent. Or that they were pleasant and generous.

You'd think of these outsiders when someone asked you about living next to someone of "another race." Your response is going to be informed by the quality of these outsiders. The same people would have very different responses to the question asked, based on whether these outsiders are socially desirable or not. If a bunch of Antarcticans moved to your homogenous town, and were a bunch of hell-raising punks, you'd become more xenophobic.

Racism in America has a different history than that in other places of the world (say, Europe, for example) mainly through its unique multicultural history.

It used to be direct, but it grew into a far more covert form of racism.

Food for thought: A lot of members in this forum trying to compare who is "more racist" then others are basically confusing covert and direct racism. Apples and oranges, guys.

As America gained influence after WWII and the Cold War, its sort of covert racism started leaking a bit into other countries (especially with the advent of the internet). Modern stereotypes of many minority groups, for example, a relatively covert form of racism, are largely derived from the United States (one exception are those of Muslims since their presence in Europe is far greater than that of the United States).

However, with the growing unrest of the world in terms of economic problems, immigration, etc., certain things are getting less covert. Alas, the predictable cycle of human behavior.

As far as Americans being racist...

First of all, it depends where you are. I found white people (Or maybe even more so latino people) to be pretty racist in Miami. I think really what it boils down to is classism though to be honest. I noticed at my work, people didn't necessarily dislike people because of their skin color, it was more the way they acted. And in Miami, a lot of black people who come through are retards. And that's really not me being racist, it's just the truth. If you don't believe me, I challenge you to go to Miami for memorial day weekend (This coming weekend, I feel sorry for my friends out there). Even black people will be thinking, "What the fuck?" When we get black people that come in and treat us with respect, we have respect for them.

Where I grew up though, I never really witnessed racism against blacks. I grew up in a predominant white area, and the few black kids we had in our school, most people got along with, and if they didn't, it had nothing to do with racism. I did see more racism against Mexicans though. I never was racist against Mexicans, or anyone for that matter. I just find it annoying when people will come to the states and refuse to learn English. I understand if you're only here for a couple months, but when I come across someone who's lived here 10 years and they don't speak, that's just ridiculous.

Another things about white Americans is that they will be racist sometimes, saying something like, "I wish these Mexicans would go back to Mexico." But then they'll have a bunch of Mexican friends. It's like they will be racist against a group, but then when presented to a Mexican they will be cool and maybe even eventually befriend them. I guess technically it's still racist, but at least they aren't openly dicks. I have a black friend though that tells me, "Shit, I have more respect for a dude driving around with a confederate flag on his truck that says I hate niggers than have someone be racist behind my back and then act cool to my face."

America is one of the more racist places I've been. Most of my time spent in America is on the east coast and much of that is in the south. Whites hate blacks. The N word is thrown out very often behind their backs. "just another N" is a pretty common saying anytime a black guy does something "wrong"

It goes both ways though IMO. Many blacks seem to hate whites as well. It's a "hate mulitplyer", as tyson put it. "don't listen to those white people...you'll sink just like the titanic" apparently is acceptable to say in the military.

I have very little experience in Hispanic communities.

A friend of mine put it quite nicely. We're not racist against skin color. We're more racist against the culture of different classes.

Honestly, take a black man from the ghetto versus suburbia and the cultural differences are stark.

I try not to let it bug me, but honestly I would rather live put up with thug life blacks than a bunch of granola eating liberal pussies.

The ranking of Brasil on this map is a joke. Racial prejudice does exist in Brasil. And in many ways, this prejudice is even more pervasive than in US or Europe. The most insidious thing about brasilian racial prejudice is that most brasilians tend to believe (and even often totally succeed in convincing themselves) the nationalist propaganda that Brasil does not really have a race problem.

Many many times in Brasil, in trendy clubs I have witnessed the bouncers, themselves people of color, exclude people trying to get in on the basis of race and not of supposed wealth.

The word "racist" is so loaded that it hardly means anything anymore. You can't discern any kind of useful information from it. It's just used as an epithet to trump discussions for lack of better arguments.

I agree - but at the very least we can clearly see that the multicultural ideology has only penetrated a fraction of the world's population.

Also, a higher level of tolerance (I hate that word) doesn't translate to a lower level of racism necessarily.

I also hate that word. You "tolerate" a baby crying on a plane, doesn't mean you like it! "Oh, we're so tolerant and diverse". It's like jargon that Orwell would be proud of.

I'm even more sick of the word 'racism'...is't such a misnomer and PC victimology concept at this point.....we're definitely in Orwellian / Soviet era Pravda reporting territory in the West now....

honestly I think 'multiculturalism' is a completely failed policy at this point, but woe be it to anyone who disagrees with it in mainstream politics or the press these days. To me it's almost like some sort of authoritarian ideal (like Communism, or even Eugenics) espoused by complete autocratic idealogues with 'pie in the sky' dreams that goes completely in the face of historical precedent. Not saying some facets of it aren't admirable, but how the f*ck did we get to where we're at now???

Robert Putnam wrote an excellent paper called "E Pluribus Unum"

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/sociology/notes07/...new%29.pdf

Basically, white people in Minnesota are the least racist.

Usually, people who travel a lot come to two understandings: either they decide that all previous stereotypes they've heard of other cultures was garbage, or they discover those stereotypes were largely true and their newfound experiences simply reinforce those stereotypes and provide a better justificaiton.

People discriminate daily. We can't know everything, so we project our own, often wrong, ideas onto unknow areas of our information sets. The advantage of a proper education is that it enables you to project more soundly. When a PC ideologue is in charge of your education though, he just teaches you how to fill that gap with total lies and horse-shit, and having to empty that stuff can lead to some serious identity crises.
