Utah soccer referee punched by player dies

A Utah soccer referee who slipped into a coma after being punched by a teenage player during a game a week ago died Saturday night, police said.

Ricardo Portillo, 46, of Salt Lake City passed away at the hospital, where he was being treated following an assault, Unified police spokesman Justin Hoyal said.

Police have accused a 17-year-old player in a recreational soccer league of punching Portillo after the man called a foul on him and issued him a yellow card.

"The suspect was close to Portillo and punched him once in the face as a result of the call," Hoyal said in a press release.

The teen has been booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Hoyal said authorities will consider additional charges since Portillo has died.

Now I wonder if Utah authorities are gonna declare him an adult and charge him with murder like you're supposed to do in a Red State.

How do you die from a punch?

That's why I avoid physical violence like hell. One punch or slap and you can kill or make him a veggie if he has predisposition for it. There are quite a lot of people living with ticking bombs inside their body and they don't even know about it.

EDIT: NY Digital: to answer your question that guy who was punched had probably undetected aneurism of brain therefore even higher then usual blood pressure could kill him. A lot of people have aneurism and they don't even know about until it goes puff.

Disgraceful and tragic. This kid would have needed to be severely punished even if it weren't for the death of referee. Being polite and a gentleman in sports is the first rule of any competition.

Take your blood pressure sometime the old-fashioned way; with a stethoscope to your arm. YOu hear the blood sloshing around in you like water in a ziploc bag.

One little blood vessel ( aneurysm), one little weak spot in a blood vessel somewhere, you get hit there, you bleed out, and the Respect Me hero gets or should get at least 10
years for manslaughter if he isn't related to a Congressman or something.

That's also why fighting when it's not for serious self-defense is not strategically wise, unless you really don't mind sitting in prison.

And no, it's not like you think it is if you haven't been there.
You can't just keep to yourself and read books like you're home alone in your apartment. The morons and thugs in there are harassing and/or threatening you all the time for some shit like illegal cigarettes, etc. When a moron stabs another moron you're in your cell 23 out of 24 hours a day for weeks or months on end until things calm down.

Crazy. A similar thing happened to a close friend of mines dad. He was playing a game of pool and won. The guy he was playing got pissed and punched him in the head. He's been in a coma ever since (This was about 4 or 5 months ago). If he dies, authorities plan on charging him with murder.

Shitty kid. Who is his mentor? That couldn't be his first outburst. He was probably the asshole kid who punked the other kids during practice. Regardless, at 17 he might catch a manslaughter charge. Personally, I wouldn't lock him up. 10 years of probation with anger management. Prison will destroy this little shithead's life.

What is wrong with that?

I doubt he is gonna be a contribution to society if he gets anger management therapy.

I understand that he is a "kid" but they are growing up faster and faster now. He probably thought he could get away with it because everyone lets him do shit. "Oh Johnny is really a good boy, just misunderstood."

The same gene pool that thought it was a good idea to buy a 5 year a rifle, which he then shoots his 2 year old sibling with (happened recently).

I don't wanna turn this into a prison system discussion and how it is a business and all, but I would rather let drug offenders out - who are there just for possession - to make room for this kid.

Punching old people isn't a good idea. Or pushing them down, cause they'll fall and break a hip. Let's let the Baby Boomers do that on their own.

What a little drama queen. He's getting all pissed that he got a yellow card. Yellow cards don't usually throw a game. Punching a ref in the face will give you a red card and that WILL throw the game. I don't follow his logic.

It's like getting a speeding ticket and then hitting the cop in the head with a hammer that you keep under your seat and speed off.

Lock him up.

The U.S. needs stricter soccer laws.

Soccer is so gay even the refs can't take a punch. [Image: banana.gif]
