Let elderly people 'hurry up and die', says Japanese minister
Japan's new government is barely a month old, and already one of its most senior members has insulted tens of millions of voters by suggesting that the elderly are an unnecessary drain on the country's finances.
Taro Aso, the finance minister, said on Monday that the elderly should be allowed to "hurry up and die" to relieve pressure on the state to pay for their medical care.
"Heaven forbid if you are forced to live on when you want to die. I would wake up feeling increasingly bad knowing that [treatment] was all being paid for by the government," he said during a meeting of the national council on social security reforms. "The problem won't be solved unless you let them hurry up and die."
I'll apply my American attitude to this question.
Medicare and Social Security are unsustainable over the long term. When Social Security was implemented the average pensioner would only live long enough to withdraw 3 or 4 years worth of benefits. Nowadays it's over 20 years.
They've increased the retirement age, but it's still not enough. Out of control defense spending, social security and medicare will bankrupt this country.
That's a purely capitalist point of view.
From a compassionate point of view I think it's shameful how Americans treat the elderly and children. It's a page straight out of the Communist Manifesto; unless you can demonstrably affect the bottom line you're considered completely worthless. Children are considered to be a burden. The elderly are shipped off to nursing homes and adult day care.
Back in the day the old school social contract was enforced; your parents take care of you when you're young and you take care of them when they're old. Not anymore. I have 3 kids and I'm not expecting any of them to do a damn thing for me. I'm going to purchase long term care insurance. And I hope my parents do the same.
The capitalist in me sees this as very intelligent. The compassionate human being in me sees this as an utter disgrace.
Does old people owe it to society to die and not suck up resources?
