Brainstorming Product Promotion Ideas for a Travel Niche Site - Your Input?

I'm getting ready to launch a website I'm building in the International Living and World Travel niche - it focuses primarily on the idea of either working abroad or working "mobile." In other words, it's targeted at people who aren't rich and still have to clock in hours of some sort to make a living but want the international lifestyle.

The main purpose of the blog and website is funneling people onto my list to receive a weekly newsletter, but it won't be your typical spammy newsletter. Instead, it'll send out regular magazine-quality articles with a strong emphasis on interviews and case studies of people I meet on the road who've already found their own way to live abroad or independent of a set location, as well as travel tips and living location breakdowns.

Anyhow, since a lot of you are interested in that lifestyle too, I thought you might be able to help with ideas about what types of products to promote. My experience with these types of travel sites is they all too often try to sell you on overpriced hotel and airline packages that people in my market, people who want to travel or live overseas for extended periods, aren't likely to purchase.

So, as part of this market, what type of information products and physical products would you be interested in? What type of specialized knowledge or services would you pay to acquire?

Thanks in advance for any insights or feedback you can offer.

To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling

Here's a product idea that would be really useful:

A map for each city or resort area, that ...

* Will print out on a single sheet of paper in b&w (& gray), so you can print it out BEFORE you arrive there. Probably a PDF or JPG format.

* With names on the main roads, but include all minor roads to avoid confusion.

* Show main public transport stops, train station, direction to airport(s) etc.

* Perhaps show airport in an inset.

* Show accomodations, supermarkets, markets, malls, bars & clubs, etc.

The problems with the existing maps that are available include ...

* You only get the map when you arrive at the accomodation, but you needed it to find the place.

* Maps are too basic, with many roads not shown, which is confusing.

* Maps are too big and confusing to unfold and look at when you are in the street. (And maybe expensive)

* Maps are very "slanted" to promote the business that gave them to you.

I've found Google Maps with a cellular data connection to be very handy, but their search function is not so good in many foreign places with spelling variations, especially in Cyrillic.

Simplified maps could be created by tracing over Google or other maps, then honed and improved by user contributions through a forum, etc.

This will all involve some work, but that will be inevitable one way or another if you want to create a quality site.

This is a really nice concept BB but have you ever actually wondered how many people genuinely live a location independent work/lifestyles. As far as I can see from this forum Roosh is the only one who is actually spending solid blocks of time in various cities across the world whilst still earning a crust. I have adopted this lifestyle over the last 2 years and sometimes feel like the only man on this planet who works in cafes by day whilst simultaneously planning his next move. Do you think you are tapping into a Niche that is to small. I guess Roosh has managed to combine travel with girls which seems to attract a much wider audience.
Anyway.. for whats it's worth some kind of datasheet resource from reliable resources would be cool. Ideally you'd want to attract locals to contribute the data so you know it's legit.
