I just started learning Russian.

Can anyone recommend some good Russian movies, TV shows etc I can download so I can get used to how it's spoken and sounds? If they have English subtitles, even better.

just checked out that site but can't make any sense of it. is it torrents or streaming? do you have to pay and/or sign up somewhere? is there an English manual??

I should start learning Russian; I'll have to wait a few years before all my affairs in Western Europe and especially Britain (naturalisation, obligations and location-independence) are settled but after that I'll start spending considerable amounts of time Eastern Europe perhaps based in Tallinn or some Polish city . Anyway, English will be enough in Estonia and perhaps the rest of the Baltics (English ability gets better every year there) but of course I want to do some hunting in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine and more even the more exotic locations further east which will certainly require Russian. Does anyone know of a few Russian apps? Duolingo is excellent but they only have Ukrainian which I would only be interested in learning after mastering Russian. I know apps won't make me fluent; reading newspapers, watching movies, speaking to native speakers are the only ways to get to that level but I want to start-out easy so to speak. Thanks in advance and I apologise if the question has been asked repeatedly.

We should get a general language thread where we talk about our language-learning endeavours and help each other out if possible

Get a Russian eng dictionary.

I use ultralingua app on my phone. It costs 30$ I think, but worth it because it gives you example sentenced as well..

First thing you need to do is learn Cyrillic, then basic words like, I you him she her them wtc.

Learn to string sentences together then memorize vocab.

Work on pronunciation.

Fuck grammer for the time being. I'm 6 months in and I plan to learn grammer only when I've accumated 9 months worth of Russian vocabulary.

It's not a bad movie. Story ok, actors pretty good but it is really not a great movie... Quite boring.

That's the easiest way to get started and almost exactly how I got my English many years ago. Only in reverse. I would watch an English (original) version of "Commando" or "Star Wars" that I watched like thousand times with translation.

I agree. You can also find the latest Hollywood movies and series. Sometimes they are well dubbed and sometimes they just talk on top of the English version, which is very annoying.

Great thread, anyone know how many hours a day one can study Russian before it just starts to be useless?

I am definitely going to focus on the top 200 words used and get some conversations in on sharedtalk and other similar sources.

I have the flexibility to pretty much study all day and juggle work around it.

Maybe it is time to turn on Russian TV fulltime just to listen to it.

How long before it get useless? Try to do 25min studying and 5 minutes breaks. That way you remember more. When you have a break dont go on internett, use your phone or media. Let your mind totally rest. Not sure for how many hours you can keep going and still learning though. I'm sure you can get a feel for it.

When the brain gets over loaded and can't absorb more. I searched a bit on the Internet seems like intensity of study also plays a role in how long someone can study. It was just a random question. I'll study as much as I can. All I can really do.

Good Morning Gents,

I'm buying the Russian Pimsleur modules in 5 lesson increments and I'm currently on unit 13 of Pimsleurs Russian course. Intermittently there is a phrase the male speaker says which sounds like "Slosh-etch-EE , EE-paft-ta-retch-EE". I have redone the previous lesson and to no avail have discovered the meaning of this phrase. If anybody could explain it I would appreciate your effort. Thanks in advance.
