I played college ball, wouldn't have put up with this for five seconds. I have no idea why none of his players blew the whistle on his behavior.

Bully. Taking advantage of his position to push around athletes who would destroy him in 10 seconds, given the chance. Being hard on your players is one thing. This goes too far.

That's really all it is. College is a coach's game. Scholarships are only for the school year, and must be renewed at the coach's discretion. He can decline to renew a player's scholarship if he chooses, and that kid has to transfer somewhere else to play. He can also refuse to release a kid from his scholarship if he decides he wants out. These men have to understand that in this era, you simply can't do this kind of thing. And it isn't about today's kids being softer either. In any era this would have been outrageous, abusive behavior. It's the loss of the scholarship that's preventing one of these kids from dropping this punk.

"The best kind of pride is that which compels a man to do his best when no one is watching."

They finished with a losing record. As I alluded to in my first post, you'd be hard pressed to find elite programs with these type of reports coming out of them in this day and age.

Yeah, thought so. Just thought I'd clear it up. Thanks.

I understand its pretty shitty behavior, but honestly, this is what ROTC is like at my school.

Whenever I hear about stuff like this happening, I always ask myself 'what's the big deal?'. Then I realize most people didn't have the shit kicked out of them by their father on more than one occasion or enlist in the USMC infantry. I guess I'm desensitized.

What an asshole. There's being tough and there's being a bully. I think this is the latter with shoving, kicking, and extreme name calling. There's no way you are going to get the best out of anyone doing what he's doing. The best coaches in basketball: Coach K, Pop, Riley, and PJ etc. are known to be tough but not bullies.

And before you know it, he's touching little boys in a locker room somewhere.

Well, the problem is that many of today's "athletes" are coddled their entire lives. Many are entitled, spoiled degenerates and some tough lovin' never hurt no body. I think the world would be a better place if people were more like this and not like the "I touched it last coach" basketball commercials and anti-bullying campaigns we see on TV.

I don't know, its just when I have to deal with stupid people at work and they keep on making the same dumb mistakes over and over again, the only way to get through to them is to verbally abuse them like this. You can try being nice and understanding and assume they'll do the right thing and for some people it works, but some people are so dumb/ignorant that this is the only way to do it.

There's tough love and then there's bullying. I agree that dealing with stupid people is annoying but no way what this guy is doing should be acceptable or considered "tough love". Kicking, shoving, throwing balls at the players and yelling is not tough love. I also disagree on your premise that the world would be a better place if more people acted like him.

You do know why the players can't fight back or say anything right? If I am not wrong, the coach controls the option to renew these students' scholarships. This is serious abuse of power. I doubt the coach would be this tough if he had to fight one of the players one-on-one.

I don't think any of his physical or verbal abuse is that bad. Players have to keep their eyes on the prize, he's doing it because a guy didn't contest a layup or isn't listening and is in the wrong place on the floor. It's certainly justified, just the nature and intensity is debatable.
