Nanoparticles Made From Bee Venom Can Kill HIV

Earlier this week we reported on the remarkable news that a Mississippi-born baby was cured of HIV. Now, as if to show the disease that it's days are truly numbered, researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown that nanoparticles infused with a toxic bee venom can kill HIV. The researchers hope to take this new compound and develop a vaginal gel that can prevent the further spread of the disease.

The key to this discovery, which was made by Samuel A. Wickline and his team at Washington University, involves cytolyic melittin peptides. Melittin is found in bee venom, and it has the fortuitous trait of being able to degrade the protective envelope that surrounds HIV.

For the experiment, Wickline's team prepared free melittin and melittin-loaded nanoparticles and set them against various strains of HIV (CXCR4 and CCR5 in particular). The researchers then showed that melittin, when delivered in these large and free accumulations, can make life miserable for the disease.

Moreover, these melittin-loaded nanoparticles left the surrounding cells unharmed, which bodes well for the development of a topical vaginal virucide. But this didn't happen by accident. The nanoparticles were endowed with a kind of filter that prevents healthy cells from coming into contact with the toxin. HIV, on the other hand, is small and it sifts through these filters, thus exposing it to the toxin.

Unlike other approaches, which work to prevent HIV from replicating, Wickline's technique involves the degradation of the virus's structure.

"We are attacking an inherent physical property of HIV," said Joshua L. Hood through a university statement, and a co-author of the study. "Theoretically, there isn't any way for the virus to adapt to that. The virus has to have a protective coat, a double-layered membrane that covers the virus."

Interestingly, the concept behind the melittin nanoparticle approach could conceivably work against other diseases, including hepatitis B and C.

Eventually, the topical gel could be combined with a spermicidal contraceptive and act as a kind of two-in-one double-whammy. But for now, the researchers say that the nanoparticles are safe for sperm, and will initially be intended for couples who are trying to conceive.

And as for the study itself, it's the first proof-of-concept that the therapeutic and safe application of a nanoparticle-mediated compound can combat HIV-1.

I thought the latest was that the chance of contracting HIV from "insertive penile-vaginal" sex was nonexistent.

uhh, condoms also stop the spread of HIV. Im not sure vaginal gel is going to succeed where condoms fail, because both require people to actually use their brains and refrain from acting entirely on animal impulse/ religious superstition. The main advantage of this seems to be for couples looking to conceive, which is a good thing I suppose.

And yes, I know there are promising treatments in the works for it, but these kind of sensational claims about just another barrier to sexual transmission seem a little overblown.

True, the original article is probably meant either to attract investors or serve as leverage in negotiations, especially with politicians who would love to take credit for a miracle cure.

The cure for HIV was developed at the same time HIV itself was developed - it being man made - a biological weapon.

The cure/ antidote probably sits somewhere in a Rockefeller Institute related lab somewhere....

maybe they have decided to roll out bits and pieces in order to market the treatment.... remember, there is no money to be made in an actual cure - so whatever results from these new breakthroughs, the end result will be a treatment requiring constant purchase.

Why do they immediately say "vaginal gel?" That would probably have a minuscule impact on HIV transmission, because women don't give it to men, and likely, not that many women contract it from men either, if they don't engage in risky behaviors like letting themselves be pounded by dudes who take it in the butt. Shouldn't they focus on developing an anal gel? Oh, wait, that might imply that sodomy has negative consequences, and we better not suggest that, because it might cause further funding to be withheld... nobody wants to support 'homophobe' scientists, after all... And with hamsterism and women's lib at an all time high, reigning them in and telling women to exercise a little common sense about who plows them is equally out of the question.

Or could it be that nobody really cares if men (or gay men) get HIV, and the only important thing is to make sure women can't get it, thus 'empowering' them to have even more lack of restraint in their sex lives?

Absolutely. I can't see why I'd view the birth of my progeny as equivalent to the deadly disease HIV is.

I understand why the idea of having a kid in the west scares some guys (its obviously less so once you get outside the west and their family courts), but if given the choice between child support and a (probably shortened) lifetime with AIDS, I'll take the kid. No-brainer.

"Vaginal gel" is merely the the least implausible, layman-friendly speculation that can be justified by the results. They haven't even shown this is safe for use in a real vagina, much less the anus or any other transmission vector.

Elements in our society would never do such a thing as develop diseases and then infect populations with them to cause them to die off - no way -
1. giving smallpox infected blankets to Indians - knowing they had no immunity
2. infecting black men and/or denying treatment for thise with syphillis in order to stufy its effects for decades
3. Running biological experiments in Guatemalans.
4. Infecting vaccines givign tio young kids with agents such as mercury and others that are known to damage brain functioning and contribute to autism......

As evidence that HIV could be a man-made virus, researchers cite testimony dating back to 1969 when Dr. Donald MacArthur, a Department of Defense spokesman, appeared before a U.S. Congressional Hearing on Chemical and Biological Warfare and declared that biowarfare experts could develop a genetically engineered "super germ" that would be able to effectively destroy the human immune system. He estimated that molecular biologists could create this new infective microorganism within 5 to 10 years. [6] A decade later, in 1979, the first gay AIDS cases were reported to the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia.

In a scientific paper entitled "Ethnic Weapons," which appeared in the November 1970 issue of The Military Review, Swedish geneticist Carl A. Larsen openly discussed biotechnologic advances that would allow human cells to be "selectively quenched." Scientists had already detected enzymatic differences in the composition of cells from various racial and ethnic groups, and theorized how these differences could be exploited to create bioweapons. For example, an enzyme deficiency in Southeastern Asian populations could make them more "susceptible to a poison to which Caucasoids are largely adapted." I seriously never talked with anyone who has come across a straight person with the HIV.

It came up at lunch the other day with my boss. The last time he banged a girl other than his wife was 2000. He was saying they used to both agree to get tested before going unprotected.
