I've been to the Greek Islands several times, and Crete was always on my to-do list, so when I heard some positive reports on the nightlife scene there, I decided to check it out. Normally I avoid traveling to European beach destinations in early August due to overcrowding, but based on information on Hersonissos in this forum, from exactly the same time last year, I decided to give it a try. It was a bit different than what I expected, so here's what I found.
Overview: Crete is the biggest of the Greek Islands (160 miles long) and has a population of over 600,000. The airport is located close to the main city of Heraklion (174,000 people) which is quite lively. Crete is also the birthplace of the Minoan civilization which dates back over 4000 years. So there's a lot to see and do if you get bored with going out. It's a huge package tour destination, so from late Spring to early Autumn, planeloads of people arrive several days a week.
The scene: Hersonissos is about a 30-40 min bus ride from Heraklion. It has a main street with restaurants, shops and hotels as well as a bar street along the waterfront. The bar street is about half as long as the main street and bars are on the landward side of the street and each one has a covered outdoor terrace on the seaward side of the street. In front of the terraces is the beach. It's pretty narrow. Other beaches can be found beyond the ends of the bar streets, they're a little bit bigger and better. The infamous British party town of Malia is about 10km farther out.
Most of the visitors are from Russia and the Netherlands, but depending on the time of the season there are also Germans, Swiss, French, Italians, Serbians and a mix of other nationalities. Scandinavians (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish) are there in small numbers but apparently haven't come in big groups for several years. You can meet English and Israelis who are staying in Malia too (mostly during the day at Star Beach). A lot of Eastern European girls are working in the shops along the Main Street. As far as ethnicity goes, you can see some occasional Asians from Central Asian Republics, a few Africans selling stuff or on holidays and quite a few Black and people of other ethnicities from Holland (and from the UK and elsewhere at Star Beach Club).
Nightlife: There are easily over 20 bars and clubs you can go to and you just have to try and see what's happening during the time you're there. Some of the best I found:
New York Bar – A cocktail bar with a small dance floor. It's one of the most crowded places. A favorite place for Russian girls and the guys who want to meet them. Cover charge is 10EUR, which gets you a free drink.
Palm Beach Club – A swimming pool by day and an upscale, outdoor cocktail bar with dancing at night. Girls come here when they want something a bit more classy than what most of Hersonissos has to offer. That means lots of Russians who really dress up and Western European girls. The average age here is probably around late 20s, so also some couples and people who aren't really out to party come here. Cover charge policy seems arbitrary, sometimes they charge you and sometimes not, but it's 10 euros with a free drink.
El Paradiso – A big bar with dancing. A good mix of all nationalities. They offer 2 for 1 drinks all night
BioBio – A favorite hang out of the Dutch. There are two of these. One plays hip hop and one plays house. During the time I was there the whole street in front was full of people drinking and dancing, like a big outdoor party until 6AM. This is a great place for guys who have good dance floor game.
Pre-club Game: Any restaurant along the main street where people are sitting down outside eating or drinking. Also any of the terraces in front of the bars and any bar offering two for one “happy hour” specials, there are often many groups of girls in these. The Star Beach Club (see below) also has a White Party every Monday from 8 – midnight.
Daytime Game: Any beaches, the cafes and pubs, walking down the main street. If you have a hotel with a pool, that's probably a good place too. The cheaper all inclusive hotels are on the two ends of the main street, so you will see groups of girls walking into the center all day long from these. Also these big complexes are good:
Star Beach Club – about 5 minutes past the end of the Main street. It's a big complex with water sports, bungee jumping, stuff for families, etc. This is full every day, with an American Spring Break atmosphere and you have lots of gaming possibilities here. The Foam Party every day at 4:30PM is great to see at least once. You can just sit at the outdoor bar next to the foam party dance floor and talk to people. The club is located on the Malia side of Hersonissos, so a lot of people from Malia come there too, which means there are quite a few English and Israelis.
Palm Beach Club – The swimming pool here is mostly girls, couples and a few families. It's not that big, so if you get there early and have some empty sunbeds next to you, you have a good chance to have single girls lying down next to you.
Food: The restaurants along the bar street are pretty bad unless you want pizza, souvlaki, gyros, or Dutch fast food. Try the main street for better.
Accommodation: Most of the tourists are coming on package deals and a lot of these include a hotel with swimming pool and all-inclusive meals and drinks. So people stay in the hotel all day, eat the free meals and sit around the pool and drink for free in the hotel day and night. Since most of the Russians don't have too much spending money outside of what they paid to get there, if you want to meet them, the best idea is to stay in one of these hotels. Otherwise you can probably get apartments for very cheap once you arrive.
Summary: The time of year when you go to Hersonissos is all important (that's true of most Greek islands anyway). The first 4 or 5 days I was there (end of the first week in August) I wouldn't have recommended Hersonissos at all. A lot of night spots were too crowded, very unfavorable ratios, too many guys only out to get a Russian girl, even if they couldn't communicate at all, and too many groups of 18yo high school guys. By the end of my stay (end of second week in August) I thought it was great. Like a different place, less crowded, good girl guy ratio, and just lots of fun and what I had expected. The beaches aren't that great, so a lot of people just go to swimming pools. Most of the locals and visitors are very friendly. If you get there during a bad period and you want to get out, there are lots of options, you can get to Santorini (great game spot) in about 2 hours by catamaran or just go to the beach, do day game and do tourist stuff.
