Hostess to go out of business

Bye bye, Twinkies! (Maybe).

Overweight American women wept.

No more Twinkies? Hostess plans to shut down (from the Chicago Tribune)

Quote:Quote:

Hostess Brands on Friday received a court order for an expedited hearing on its request to
liquidate.

The hearing on liquidation request is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern time Nov. 19, in bankruptcy court in White Plains, N.Y.

The bankrupt maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, said it had sought court permission to go out of business after failing to get wage and benefit cuts from thousands of its striking bakery workers.

Hostess, which has about $2.5 billion in sales from a long list of iconic consumer brands of snack cakes and breads said it had suspended operations at all of its 33 plants around the United States as it moves to start liquidating assets.

"We'll be selling the brands and as much of the infrastructure as we can," said company spokesman Lance Ignon. "There is value in the brands."

Hostess said a strike by members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union that began last week had crippled its ability to produce and deliver products at several facilities, and it had no choice but to give up its effort to emerge intact from bankruptcy court.

I'm going to consider this a victory in one very important battle:

I'm not a fat bastard by any means but I'm not too happy that my favorite sometimes snack (the Twinkie) is going completely out of business.

I used to get a red bull, a twinkie, and a pack of smokes to keep me occupied on very long car drives. What can I do now?

I've always wished that I could try them and see what the taste is like. I imagine that it's similar to Bounty.

18,500 jobs GONE. Sad for the country but I LOVE IT ! Those greedy, socialist, union thugs had it coming. This is just the beginning though ... wait till Obamacare and we'll see more of this.

Hostess still owns the Twinkie brand and the facilities, it's not like they're gonna burn it all down.
I'd put even odds that they sell to Grupo Bimbo and Americans continue to gorge themselves at county fairs.

Hostess going out of business doesn't mean the twinkie is no more. Hostess is liquidating and selling the brand. So now instead of hostess making them, maybe it'll be Kraft or Nabisco. If there's demand for them and it's profitable, somebody else will step in an produce them.

I haven't eaten a twinkie since I was a kid, but they're probably no worse than eating a danish, donut, chocolate croissant or anything else like that.

One of the ingredients in Twinkies is "Beef Fat". I always found that interesting.

Walmart sells generic knock-off Twinkies under their Great Value brand, but they're probably still made by Hostess.

The union workers were asked to take a 10% pay cut from what I have heard on radio. The company was in bankruptcy, and the unions refused to take a 10% pay cut and instead went on strike. Let's see, would you prefer a 10% pay cut or a 100% pay cut? I do not think the union workers should be eligible for unemployment benefits at all. They had jobs which they deliberately terminated, because they knew they could just fall back on unemployment benefits.

Exempting union workers from unemployment benefits would put a check on their power.

I went to Wal-Mart today (to buy more kale for my juicer) and saw hoards of gargantuan fatties (we're talking 350 lbs. +) flocking the store to snatch up the remaining Twinkies and Ho-hos.

The brand and recipe are for sale...I doubt much will change in the long run. There might be a short disruption, alleviated by a celebrated "Twinkie is BACK" campaign a la McRib... the new owners would be silly to change anything about this product which has been fine-tuned to sell sugar-in-fat to hardworking, starving princesses.

Going grocery shopping later tonight, I hope I can see people flocking to grab the last remaining twinkies haha.
