If you don't speak Spanish, make a beeline to Playa del Carmen. If you do speak Spanish, you should try Mazatlan/Culiacan, Mexico City, Monterrey, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, and maybe Zacatecas. If you follow the advice given on the forum and use common sense, you should be more than fine.

Well, my Spanish proficiency is...zero. But I wonder if you recommended the Yucatán Peninusla because of the all-inclusive resorts that are frequented by Westerners. Is Playa del Carmen mostly Westerners, or are there also worldly, bilingual Mexicans? Because if it's mostly Western twentysomethings on all inclusive holidays I could just go to D.F.

What jariel said. All inclusives can and often do have quality girls in them, but your problem there would be that you can't bring in guests who aren't staying at the all inclusive, which is a huge cockblock. If you definitely decide to go to Playa, I will P.M. you my Playa strategy which I haven't posted for reasons which I explained on one of the Playa threads.

Mexico City is great and contrary to what Jariel says you don't need to be proficient in Spanish in the least bit, my Spanish is terrible to non existent and I had more pussy thrown at me than I could keep up with. I am black which definitely made it easier for me, I'd suggest anyone and everyone go ASAP. You don't want to be in bad neighborhoods use common sense and you will have zero problems.

I know what it's like to be Black and in DF, we have exotic factor there, everyone's not going to have that, furthermore, everyone isn't going to have the means to stay in areas like Condesa, Roma, and Polanco.

Also, the poster I responded to referred to bilingual Mexicans, those don't grow on trees in D.F.

I didn't say you said that, I was just saying, let's not discount the ability to communicate with people just because someone else was comfortable with the fact that they couldn't or got certain results despite the fact that they couldn't.

That's not going to be everyone's experience nor are we all operating from the same comfort zones.

Technically, you don't need to know any particular language to be able to go anywhere, but let's not act like that doesn't affect the experience at all, that's being disingenuous to reality -- at a minimum, knowing the language can in most cases save you A LOT of money.

Saying you don't need to be proficient at all in Spanish to go to D.F. is misleading, especially when the poster gives an indication that he's hoping to run into bilingual Mexicans -- i.e. Mexicans who also speak English.

D.F. is not Cancún, where you are greeted by billboards in English and English-speaking airport employees.

I gotta back up Jariel here. When you say you don't need to know Spanish "in the least bit" that's a bit of an exaggeration. When I was there, not even the customs guy who was asking me questions on why I was visiting spoke any English. When I went to buy my sim card in the airport, the woman at the counter spoke zero English. When the sim card didn't work properly I couldn't really explain in Spanish and luckily a bilingual person in line helped me out. I don't think I had one waiter or taxi driver who spoke English. I had to buy intercity bus tickets and I don't know how I'd have been able to do that speaking no Spanish as those women at the counter didn't speak any English at all. That said, language proficiency isn't a reason to not visit a country. But it's another thing altogether to say you don't need to know any of it in the least bit which gives the impression that there are lots of people who speak English in Mexico. There aren't outside of places with lots of resorts like Cancun.

Again, if you don't speak Spanish and go to Playa del Carmen, you can have all the girls you want there. I'm also convinced that speaking Spanish actually hurts you in Playa del Carmen. The whole rest of the country is different. I really don't understand most of the Mexico posts on the forum. Pretty much everything else on the forum (except for a lot of the Miami stuff) makes perfect sense to me and is consistent with my experience. People say D.C. women are ugly. I say D.C. women are ugly. People say Argentina is difficult. I say Argentina is difficult. People do well in Central America. I do well in Central America. A lot of, or even most of, the Mexico information on here seems to come out of left field.

Some of us have some sort of combination of being good-looking, tall, well-dressed, well-built guys, I have the luxury of being that type of guy and having a different skin tone, so the places I've traveled in Latin America, I've been able to get by on physical attraction alone, but as a native speaker, I'm pretty certain I've pulled hotter chicks because I was actually able to communicate with them.

Yet and still I'd have the same advice 100% of the time for anyone considering Mexico City or anywhere else in the world If you thought about it and have the means and time definitely go dont think twice about it or ask a bunch of questions negging yourself out! I've told many people including AmericanInEurope while in Mexico that Mexico is one of the worst places I've been to for English speaking ever (which was kind of surprising to me).. But I've known since my first trip overseas and many places after you dont have to know the language to have a good time but it helps alot (mind you I right now i live in a country where English is pretty terrible). So still at the end of the day my thinking on the subject and advice doesnt change, Mexico City is great dont worry about the language barrier dive in and go!!!!! But then again thats what I do when I travel

I see where you are coming from. What you are suggesting is that one cannot to have all conditions lined up before taking a trip. Traveling is about adventure and dealing with the unknowns. Most people stay home because they cannot burst out their small bubble. In fact, When I started to travel to Mexico and other countries in latin america. I did not speak a lick of Spanish. I became fluent by talking to the locals. Now, I am not only fluent but also able to make the difference between Dominicans who don't pronounce their "S" , Colombians (Que mas? How are you?) and Mexicans. Learning a language is all about exposure and environment. One does not have to be proficient in a language before undertaking a trip; trying to meet and know people. My two cents.

That's exactly what I'm saying. As opposed the the OP (or anyone interested in DF) theorizing, worrying, and hoping to meet and befriend an influx English speakers (which ain't going to happen in the DF)I think he should close his eyes and jump head first and he will be pleasantly surprised and the experience will definitely be nothing but beneficial. If you're scared to get out of your comfort zone you're simply short changing yourself, grown men don't need babysitters only a smart phone, a few dollars in his pocket and a positive mind set about having a great experience.
