People aren´t helping haiti because it is ´in style` they are helping because it is the poorest country in the western hemesphere and it is virtually ruined. These people had nothing before the earthquake, now they have less than nothing. Comparing the current situation in Haiti to the situation in NYC or Detroit ghettos is simple irrelivent. Nobody is actually starving or dying of thirst in NY, Little Haiti or Detroit. Not even really in Brazil or China either.

I understand it if someone values some complete stranger enough to donate their hard earned money, but the idea that just because you have MORE means you OWE someone else because they have less is bullshit. I believe every man has the right to their own life, and the consequences of that means that no one has a mortagage on anyone else's life because they NEED something. Don't get me started on how "charity" actually causes all these poor imbeciles to have even MORE babies they can't afford.

Haiti doesn't need donations, they need the U.S. Government to go in and provide security, asap. I read about the roving bands of raiders at night, come in and rape little kids, their mom, and take their supplies....they are savages.

If they want to "help the people of haiti" we need to get some troops on the ground and help them rebuild. If not, then things will continue to get worse. Even assuming your donations go for food, medicine, and supplies, how is it guaranteed that the week will even get these things, and not the guys with the guns, who will then sell it to the highest bidders? Security is key.

Also I do agree with the earlier statements of helping those less fortunate, but not just because its the "cool" thing to do. I also agree that charity comes in many forms and there are tons of places to donate your time or money starting with your own local areas before sending the money to a place where it might not actually be used by the people.

Furthermore, I believe that people are forgetting the old cliche; "charity begins at home".

If you deem some one worthy of "charity", you give it to the based on your own, internal convictions, not based on the deeds of others.

I also think throwing money at problems does nothing. Money is meant to buy things, which saves time that would be used to make them (food, clothes, etc). I would argue that true charity is giving someone your time, like volunteer work, working in a soup kitchen.

Each to their own though.
