Budapest Thoughts

2 months back I hit Budapest for the first time. I only went for 24 hours and was with family on a personal matter so I never hit the clubs or bars but wow! What a stunning city,in fact it is probably the best looking city I have been to in EE. Beautiful boulevards with crumbling mansions,Andrassy, the Danube, the Vth district, the outdoor baths,Margaret island....that's not to mention that it's cheap and pretty well connected by train to some interesting towns in Ukraine,Romania,Russia,Serbia etc. I've been looking to set up a bolt hole in EE for a while, somewhere I can spend maybe 6 months of the year and use as a base for further adventures in the region. I've been checking out apartment sales and you can buy things like this for the price of a decent car:

This one is 26,000 Euro
http://realestatehungary.hu/erzsebetvaro...4014?sid=0

This one is 19,000 Euro
http://realestatehungary.hu/erzsebetvaro...5769?sid=0

This one is brand new and 23,000 Euro
http://realestatehungary.hu/rehabilitaci...7147?sid=0

Then there are business premises like this that cost little and could be converted into a pub/restaurant/modelling agency/porn studio/dating agency etc:

9000 Euro!
http://realestatehungary.hu/terezvaros-n...0838?sid=0

17,000 Euro
http://realestatehungary.hu/terezvaros-n...2764?sid=0

So for a smallish investment you could have a place to live and a small business.

Of course before committing myself to anything I would head over there for a bit to see how I like it and if I could see myself living there. But before I do it would be interesting to get people's take on the place,in particular funner side of things, what are the women like and people in general. The Magyars are a world apart culturally from the Slavic world I know but are they similar in mentality. Also I didn't see too many hotties when I was there, was I was just there on a bad day? So what's the deal with Budapest/Hungary: a little Utopia or did I just have my holiday rose tinted specs on?

Budapest is the best city in EE for me.

The people there are quite a miserable bunch, but as is often the case, with alcohol in them they go wild.

Make out potential is very high in clubs, although they tease a bit when it comes to SNL

For some reason you don't see that many hotties on the street, but come nightime they surface from somehwere.

Most foreigners do not bother to learn language there as it's so alien and not used anywhere else, which makes integrating hard work.

Watch out for Gypsies trying to rob you at knifepoint, and the women in the centre that try to lure you into bars to steal all your cash

When visiting, I was warned by a native Hungarian to avoid District 8, though I have no first hand experience to confirm this. It is a fun city though.

I think Hungary as a whole is played out since the '90s.Hungarians do not have slavic mentality and women look definetely worse than Czech and Slovak ones. Also worse than Serbian and a bit better than Romanian.I would describe their mentality as turkish in core with a Germanic wrap. They never remided me of anything slavic and I suppose they do not have any high opinion about Slavs(except the sympathy for Poles with which the mutual friendship is famous).
Despite the relative negative features of Hungary there is recently a new rise of opportunities after the crisis hit the country hard.I saw a 180 degrees transformation to the attitudes of the local women(some of who are rather kinky you will see piercings and stuff that will blow off your mind).

I hear the language is an absolute bitch to learn. I wonder how much you can function there long-term with only English?

I think it depends on what you will be there for?

Business? It might require some skills.

Base of operations for EE? I don't see an issue.

Im not going to lie. Those 30k apartments look rather tempting. I might pass the info along to my friend (he's a native) and see what he thinks.

Haha, yeah had that happen to me on Vaci street in the evening. Two dodgy looking gypsy type women pretending to be tourists asking me if I fancied hitting a bar with them. Laughed in their faces.

Cheapest property prices I've found in an EE capitol. In fact prices are cheaper then apartments in industrial shit holes in rural Belarus. I'm not sure why tbh.

Great, report back with his opinions Pacesetter.

Rents are very low in Budapest so they would not make a good rental investment but as a place to live in whether permanently or for part of the year they seem incredibly good value. I also read on a Hungarian property forum that going direct through the owners will mean the opportunity to bargain prices down by about 20% on most properties but don't know how true that is. Definitely room to manoeuvre on the prices published though. If you're happy in a Soviet built apartment in the suburbs you can get them for about 22,000 Euro with little difficulty but I like the character of the old ones more.

I have been there a few times and simply love the city, however I was also surprised by the lack of nice women I saw walking the street. I was with my ex and was not able to see much of the nightlife.
It is a city I would seriously think of moving too, I have seen some nice ex-pat jobs there and see that the country is growing. I believe they recently opened a Starbucks there last year, which is a good sign.
Hungarian women on the whole are sexy and passionate, although they can be tough to crack.
Those house prices are fantastic, although when i was there I noticed alot of property for sell.

Since when was a Starbucks opening anywhere a good sign?

The third picture in the first link is representative of what you actually see in Budapest. If you notice Hungarian girls legs are more germanic not so good shaped like slavic ones.
Also the face is inferior to what you meet in Czech Republic.
A serious advantage of Budapest are theed masses of Russian girls flowing in and the proximity of Ukraine and Poland.

You read my mind,I wanted to ask about that.

Are there many Russian women in Budapest and if so are they living there or just travelling through? I saw quite a lot on Mamba are residing in Hungary. In Romania I never met one Ukrainian chick so I'd be happy to hear Hungary has more of them living there. I don't see why you could not live in Budapest but head up to the Ukraine on the weekends to party. In fact Budapest has great rail connections to interesting cities, these are the destinations from Keleti Railway station:

Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Sofia, Varna (Bulgaria)
Split, Zagreb (Croatia)
Prague (Czech Republic)
Berlin, Hamburg, München (Germany)
Venice (Italy)
Warsaw (Poland)
Bucharest, Sibiu, Arad, Timişoara (Romania)
Bryansk, Kaluga, Moscow (Russia)
Belgrade (Serbia)
Bratislava (Slovakia)
Ljubliana (Slovenia)
Zürich (Switzerland)
Kyiv, Lviv (Ukraine)
Istanbul (Turkey)

You can also drive up to Uzhgorod which is a town I liked in 3.5 hours from Budapest. That's part of the cities appeal: it's cheap, stunning but is centrally located for EE explorer such as us.

I have had some truly epic nights in Budapest, I have told my tale about banging a young drunk in a train toilet. Also I went to a club called sensation in 2007, Fedde Le Grande was playing, I ended up getting blown by a Hungarian volleyball player in the toilets, she had taken ecstasy, we had each others hands in our pants on the dancefloor, I was licking her juices and kissing her.

She was taken home by her friends, but then I was on fire, the other girls must have smelled my success and the juices, and it seemed they were all after me, ended up banging a Russian who spoke no English.

Probably the most fun I have ever had

I have been a few times and to be honest I did not see the kinda of quality posted in the first link. Prague had more hotter looking chicks in my humble opinion.
However, that would not stop me from going back there, i think Hungarian women are sexy.

I was in there when I visited, thought it was a good day game location especially down in the part where all the fast food places are. Lots and lots of girls hanging about there on the weekend I was there.

It's the old dilemma: Live in a city where you love living with great amenities and things to do but where you're not a superstar for being foreign. Or live in a run down shit hole but where girls throw themselves at you because you're exotic.

I can't get away from the UK till July for anything but overnighters but I'm planning on heading over in July/August to see what the potential of the city really is. Keep me informed of your plans so that if our diaries match we can wing.

My big question - what's the food like in budapest? It's not widely known for its cuisine (or at least I don't think it is). Is it possible to eat healthy with good variety?

Exactly right, see how it goes

If what Kamaki says about cheap flights between Budapest and Lvov I could keep a cheap shag pad in Lvov.

Will keep you updated with my movements

You mean eating out or cooking at home?

The main dish is Goulash in case you din't know. You can get it everywhere. I ate in some very good restaurants. In fact I can recommend what is probably the best restaurant I've ever eaten in. It's up on top of Gellert Hill and has excellent food at a reasonable price. What makes it exceptional however is the view from your table, spectacular:

As for cooking at home, they have plenty of Tescos there so I'm sure variety won't be a problem. I saw lots of greengrocers and stuff so you'd be fine.

Yes ghoulash is great, and they have some other stuff like stew and dumplings. Plus there is a huge range of foreign food everywhere, will never go hungry, unlike on Ukraine

In Belgrade now heading to the countryside to visit family. Nice to be back, had a huge cevapi and yogurt for breakfast.

Fun and games will start when I return to Belgrade, I hope.

Bumping this thread.

Vorkuta, did you ever end up making a move on Budapest? If so, what happened? If not, why not?

Does anybody else have any new news/experiences?

It seems like there is no discernible consensus on the status of Hungarian girls in Budapest, with some players saying great, and others saying not so great.

Did you purchase Vorkuta? Have not visited Budapest in over 4 years, had a great time then, not sure how much it's been affected by foreign sex tourists since then(due to porn industry et al)

Whilst I'd love to be writing this from an apartment overlooking the Danube I've not made the move or purchased. I made another trip out there but again,as much as I loved the city physically,I just could not get any kind of a handle on the Hungarians. I just can't connect. I'll be visiting again in Feb for a couple of nights so I'll see what happens then. If that missing piece of the jigsaw clicks into place I'll start planning. If they were a Slavic race I'd have moved years back.

As for the women,I would say 'disappointing' is the best way to describe them especially if you've spent time further east.
