Had a search and seems no PP data sheet. I've been before but for a couple days, stayed in a hotel right beside the bus station where I arrived, did a day of sight seeing and then left for the beach so didn't get to know this city at all and constantly here how much fun it is.

Where's the best area to stay? Obviously want to be within walking distance of the night life and action. Not too fussed about sightseeing as I saw the prison etc last time. Only thing I might do is go shoot and blow some stuff up.

Recommend some clubs and bars? Am I likely to find any normal girls out in bars and clubs (I know elsewhere in Cambodia I didn't) or just be dealing with pros?

Decent places to eat? Not fancy restaurants but if you know some good spots, particularly to get Cambodian food then great, I just remember eating at my hotel and the Cambodian version of Maccy Dees last time.

Any other tips or advice welcome.

In Cambodia its hard to find regular girls so you have to give shoring a try. I had a blast in Cambodia but i was lucky to be there at the right place and time. The lakeside area is closed down now so its hard to repeat what i did..

Go to heart of darkness ( a club for backpackers/foreigners and freelance girls) or to Sharkey's ( all freelancers and lots of old dudes) if you go to other places its all bar fining and mamasans. I never went to pro bars or mamasan places and advise against it.
I got laid a lot in Phnom Penh, in fact i never got so much lays as there but its tricky as hell so be carefull. I have long stories full of drama,fighting and fucking about it on my website and i cant go back there for several reasons.

I think theres also a place called Walkabout, never been there but i've heard it full of old expats. Do me a favor if you ever speak to expats living there, ask if they know my name or website. i want to know how how "famous"i really am there. In other words: how big is the chance i get killed over there.

Yeah Heart of Darkness is a name that pops up a lot. Remember hearing abour Sharkeys last time too. I'm definitely going to give PP a chance this time, last time round I was convinced it was just another shitty city (I'd spent 2 dreadful weeks in Saigon for reasons beyond my control) and that I wanted to see the prison and killing fields and hit the beach so got out too fast.

Like you Alpha I only made a flying visit, so not much to contribute sorry.

It was towards the end of my mostly planned trip and my traveling buddy and I decided by the time we got there we would be over cheap hotels, overnight train rides and backpackers so we booked 2 nights in an awesome 2 bedroom apartment that is run by the somewhat famous Foreign Correspondents Club (FCC). Its a pretty pimp place, well furnished - your own private entrance seperate from the FCC which is quite the tourist trap (there is a couple of buildings between you so you) - sweet private balcony. We paid almost $60 each per night (in late January - busy season), but after doing it cheap in most place it was a nice change.

Location is awesome right on Sisowath Quay, we found quite a lot of bars nearby - but the few we checked out most were stocked with pros and semi-pros or were just plain old average looking bars. My friend had read too much Lonely Planet and travel forum bullshit before going and was terrified of Phnom Penh, one thing he kept harping on about was this club Heart of Darkness where apparently there had been quite a few shootings. Somehow I talked the guy out of his fears and dragged him to the club - that had a no guns sign out the front. It was packed with mostly backpacker and a few local girls (mostly freelancers I think but not sure). Managed a fun night.

Was some nice looking eats for various budgets around there, plenty to choose from. We ate at the FCC first night, pricey but amazing view at sunset and atmosphere was great. Honestly cant rember where else we ate, all quite western fare.

Second night there I convinced two younger and cute staff to take me out once they finished work (one was a waitress in the bar/restaurant and the other was a cleaner with poor english). My buddy wasn't up for it so the three of us grabbed a motodop or whatever they call them (motorbike towing a 4 seat little carriage thing. Honestly have no idea where we ended up, I know we crossed over the Tonle Sap, maybe 5 minutes or so ride north. Was a few little bars in the street, packed with locals, saw only a handful of westerners. Had a great time. I would definitely recommend that strategy to find local girls rather than pros - the girls aren't going to screw you over because you can easily dob them in to their boss if they try something shady. I paid for the motodop and bought them a cheap drink each, pretty sure it cost me no more than $5.

Phnom Penh is the capital, not just a tourist town, you just need to get away from the tourists (and particularly in PP the scores of NGO expat white knights who are still there) and find where the locals live, eat and drink - where the pros are not looking for johns. If I was there longer I would have scoped that out properly myself, but I didnt have time so just enlisted the girls to take me there as a fun shortcut. For instance in Chiang Mai your first point of call to get away from tourists is to head to the bars and clubs near the university - fresh 18 - 20 year old non-bar girls on tap, with a hell of a lot less farang around.

I didn't go to Thunder Ranch, the shoot shit place, but every motodop guy will know the place and take you out there. I had planned to do it, but the husband of my guest house owner in Chiang Mai was some sort of brass in the army reserve so he drove me and my buddy out to the reserves range and we had a cute Thai woman who was top ranked national competition air pistol shooter as our instructor.

Don't waste time pipelining Cambodia, just go there and live like a king. If you are young and decent looking you will kill it, the only competition there are the 60 year old men.
Was there for around a week and had a blast. The city itself is fucking dirty and if you go to a market you might throw up from the smell.

I wouldn't bother in Phnom Penh, or anywhere in Cambodia- the place is so poor that all of the women are prostitutes. Cambodian police used to chase me around trying to sell me their badges. Flee PP and head out to Sihanoukville and hit up the beach.

The most fucked up thing I remember- there is an army base just outside of Phnom Penh- you can pay the soldiers to shoot their weapons. For $150, they will take you to a field where you can shoot a cow with a bazooka.

I would be cautious with that taxi driver if i were you. They are interrested in your money much more than in you.

I stayed at the legendary Guesthouse NR 9 on lake side. (boeng kak lake) The lake has dissapeared now due to construction work and they basically chased about 25000 people away there. There might be some part left, please ask around. I've read somewhere that guesthouse nr 9 is a hotel now under the same name but i'm pretty sure it will never be the same as when i raised hell there.

If you ever run into some expats ask about me. You might hear some funny stories. Go to heart of darkness.

I had a blast in PP and would love to go back there. With a shaved head and a big fake beard haha.

Well that's not true is it. It's just a stupid thing to say by someone whos ignorant and should probably just stay at home. ALL the women in Cambodia are prostitutes. Think about what you're saying. Anyway spoke to some locals last night and asked about night life. At first they just told me about Heart of Darkness and Pontoon but I said I don't want to hear about those places, tell me somewhere good where Cambodians go. Here's what I found out...

St Tropez (a Cambodian HiSo club where rich girls frolic with politicians, pop and movie stars)
River Houses (mixed tourist and Khmer crowd)
Rock (Normal Cambodian club)
Spark (Normal Cambodian club)
Darling Darling (another HiSo cambodian place)

Last night I sat in one bar all night chatting up the waitress, got talking to her and the other girls working there. They meet guys here all the time who tell them they'll take them back to Europe with them but it takes a long time and they're trying to do it, some have been waiting years texting and emailing back and forward asking when it will happem. Personally I don't think most of these guys back in Europe will even be trying. I asked the hottest one with the best English if she wanted to come grab some food with me when she finished, she at first said it would be bad for her because cambodian girl and barang means people will think she's a hooker then she said she'd come but she wanted to jump into tuk tuks and drive far away to some place. I recommend River House Lounge for a mix of the more HiSo crowd. Also there is a night club at the Naga casino that gets a good HiSo turnout. Its hard to meet middle class girls in the Penh because there is hardly any middle class at all. The lower class girls are also rather inaccessible because they're parents tend to keep them locked away until they get married.

The Heart of Darkness seems to have been majorly remodeled and doesn't have the same sleezy 'bar from starwars' feel that it had years ago, but is still mainly freelancers.

It had been remodeled when i was there in 2010. The first time i was there in January 2010 it had the old Star Wars bar feeling but when i came back in march 2010 it looked more like an upscale bar/disco. i went there only once or twice the second time.

Correct me if i'm wrong if there has been more remodeling work done.

Was in Cambodia for a couple of weeks back in 2001. Got great memories of taking the boat down the Tonle Sap from Angkor into PP and then the hydrofoil up the coast past deserted tropical beaches from Sihanouville to the Thai border. Great journeys both of them and a really interesting little country in general. Don't know how things are now but when I crossed the border from Thailand you were greeted by a different world: the poverty was striking. The roads were horrendous with the journey from the border into Siem Reap taking about 8 excruciating hours. Definitely worth it to see Angkor though.

As for PP itself: I stayed at a place down opposite the river near the palace. Had a good bar underneath and ended up getting my non pro Kampuchean flag with the barmaid after taking her on a date to the fair. I banged a couple of pros too tbh. I did not like the Walkabout,a couple of pros tried to steal my wallet and the atmosphere was a bit too seedy for me. Heart of Darkness was closed due to a temporary crack down on bars at the time I was there but I found plenty of cool bars to shoot pool in and meet other travelers to swap war stories over a few beers. The best girls I saw in PP were the promotions girls who walk around venues selling a certain brand of ciggarettes in uniforms. I'm not really into the Asian look but I saw some little stunners who were very bangable. Would definitely target this group if I went again. I would say that shoring would reap the most rewards by far in the country.

Overall I thought Cambodia was a cracking little country,great beaches up near the Thai border that when I was there were deserted and great places to top up the tan and get away from it all. Of all the SE Asian countries I visited Cambodia was the one I would be most inclined to visit again if I was out that way.

The roads have all been done up from Thailand to Siem Reap, properly paved etc. The story is that it was due to be done years ago but they never did it because there was more money to be made from having shit roads, it meant the bus journey took longer so they could charge more and force you to spend a night at the bus companies owned guesthouse over the border on the premise it wasn't safe to drive after dark. There's still a ton of scams going on from any bus going from Thailand to Cambodia, fake border guards, fake breakdowns to get you to spend money on taxis and hotels, there are websites dedicated to the topic. I chose to fly instead. Not worth the hassle to take the bus.

I went out on a date with a khmer chick last night that I pipelined on tagged.com. She was pretty cool even though I was 2hrs late at meeting her due to phone / location fuck ups and being really lazy. She drove me around town all night on her scooter to cool places to eat (this wicked little restaurant that was playing great music like The Pixies, The Smiths, Radiohead etc) and had good local food and then a load of bars, we ended up on a rooftop hotel bar with a great view of the city and at that point I knew it was game on. She drove me back to my guesthouse and I invited her in but the security guard, standing there in nothing but his underwear, cockblocked me. Bastard! I was getting constant calls from other girls on tagged I sent my number to so will be attempting to get the cutest of those out on dates the next few nights and working out which hotel is guest friendly or where I can take them to. I'd rather have locals come pick me up on their bikes at my hotel and drive me round to cool places than hang about with whores in Heart of Darkness.

Looks like you are not really trying and you made the biggest mistake you can start with : not securing a place to bang. You can bang a girl in just about every guesthouse in PP.
I was banging 5 girls in the first week in my 4 dollar guesthouse room, but wait, those don't count in your opinion because i shored whores from Heart of Darkness.
