Lifting weights and low carb dieting

This thread is strait full of a lot of trash. THE MAN IS CLEARLY STARVING. I cringed looking at your daily diet I was like... "Where are the nutrients". Strait up real talk if you have to rely on vitamin supplements your diet is flawed. A true well rounded approach will hit all the bases.
This man needs more fats, your body is expending too much energy in the gym and processing the heavy meats and fibrous foods. People keep throwing him in the wrong direction, the body is a car and needs certain things to run well. Up your fat intake 10 fold. Walnuts, Extra Virgin olive oil, coconut oil. You can still mess around with low carb if you do this. Me personally I would get in more carbs, I am not for low carb diets on a long term basis. Many people on the forum are big fans, but I myself can't fuck with it. So do you.

But again just from seeing you daily diet man... EAT!

Well, it's not that I am starving, but I just lack the energy. I will see how it goes this week. I eat enough fats too. I eat almonds and fish + peanut butter.

I first heard about this "keto" stuff a few years ago while watching a Randy Couture fight. I researched it a little bit, but basically forgot about it until now. Very interesting stuff!

Donald, every day, I eat steel cut oats with rice milk. I'll eat turkey, chicken or goat from time to time. My carbs are either brown rice or garri (roasted cassava).

I might throw in some swiss chards, lettuce, cucumbers for my green veg.

That's it. You can pour olive oil on the veg to make it taste nice or go and buy some kippers (plain no mixes).

I cook 98 percent of the food I eat myself.

Coupled with ACV, you can't fcuk with me on a energy level. If I am tired, I sleep, if not, I lift or play sports.

That's it.

You suffer depleted energy post workouts like I did. This did not stop until I started to up my glycogen levels post workout with dextrose. I consume 30-60g of dextrose in my post workout protein to spike my levels back to normal levels. This low energy feeling you have post workout is your body in crisis mode, it is shutting down to maintain energy and thus starts eating away at its self! Not cool stuff. This effects your muscle gains and over time is not good. You will notice a big difference if you consume quick carbs post workout, dextrose is the cleanest and quickest way.

Don't underestimate on fats.. Consume more. Plant and nut fats won't make you big, your not even getting enough nutrients now IMO. People shy away from them but there is no other way to maintain viable energy, you will run yourself into a wall trying to run your body on mostly all protein. I consume 3K+ Calories per day close to half is fat, I am lean and ripped as fuck.

I doubt that any civilization or empire ran and conquered without a viable whole carb and medium or long chained plant fat. The soviets ran on carbs... Americans run on protein look how lackluster they were/are.

Low carb folks would be wise to introduce super whole carbs into their diet. Cassava, millet, Qunioa, hominy. These are all foods empires ran and conquered on. Why eat like a fukin neanderthal when you can like a champion!

Lifting weights and low carb dieting

I've been doing a ketosis diet for 5 weeks and it is by far the most effective and easiest diet I have ever used.

Here's my daily diet at my current weight of 172lbs:

Meal 1: 3 whole eggs, 4 egg whites

Meal 2: protein shake with 45 grams of protein powder, water and 1 tablespoon pb or almond butter

Meal 3: 7 oz of chicken, turkey, or lean fish and 1/2 cup nuts

Meal 4: same as Meal 2

Meal 5: 7 oz of beef or fatty fish, green salad with 1 tablespoon of olive oil dressing

Meal 6: 45 gram protein shake but no nut butter this time

I also take a few fish oil capsules a day and very importantly, a fiber laxative am and pm.

Once a week you must have a cheat meal (only one meal) during which you consume as many carbs as you can-I eat pizza, mexican food with tortillas, chinese food with rice, ice cream, pie, cookies fruit, etc. Up to 300 grams of carbs. This is necessary to recharge your muscles and prevent your body from going into starvation mode and reducing your metabolism.

A day or two after the cheat meal i am back in ketosis which i can identify by a funny taste in my mouth, fruity breath, and odd smelling urine.

In five weeks i have lost 12lbs and more importantly 2 1/2 inches on my waist-I'm now down to a 33 1/4 inch waist. My abs are coming out and I plan to keep going until i have a six pack.

I seldom get hungry on this diet and then only right before I am scheduled to eat anyway. High protein and moderate fat intake is satiating, and by avoiding carbs you avoid the insulin spikes that trigger hunger pangs.

I have not not done any cardio at all-deliberately. I am waiting until my fat loss stalls then i will introduce cardio. If it stalls again I will consider taking a fat burner. I have continued lifting, with my normal program of heavy compound lifts. I haven't noticed any reduction of strength, although toward the end of the week I feel a lack of energy in my muscles when I am walking up steps. This is expected, since your muscles are burning fat instead of carbs.

I tried mixing a keto diet and weight lifting, and it straight up DID NOT work out. I could not push myself as hard in the gym, and my muscles wore out a lot faster.

If you're weight training an atkins type diet may not be the best choice.

What's worked for me so far, when it comes to gaining muscles and losing body fat, is mixing up weight lifting with a cardio/strength-training workout like BodyPump. I try to do BodyPump at least twice a week at the local gym, and one or two days a week I do regular strength training.

My waist size has come down, I can eat what I want (although I still eat fairly clean), and I can drink beer 3 days a week. This way I get to balance a social life and work/nutrition without having to pay too much attention to details.

I just work hard when I'm at the gym 3-4 times a week and it all works out.

how do you guys have sufficient energy when you eat low carb/low calorie?

for the past month or so i've cut down A LOT on carbs. i only eat bread or pasta maybe once or twice a week, and i can DEFINITELY tell a difference in my energy level.

this afternoon when i was doing my dumbbell routine after my second set i started to feel insanely light headed and nauseous, and i think it's due to the fact that i've cut down on carbs. either that or my rest time in-between sets is just too short which is also a possibility, but i doubt it because i've been doing this for a while. i superset every lift and rest a minute or so in-between.

i cook almost every meal at home and for the most part i can say that i eat pretty healthy. i'm not willing to eat egg whites, nuts, and leaves all day but i'm not stuffing my face full of oreo cheesecake either. i eat well rounded meals that consists of lean meats (every other day i'll have bacon or chorizo with my eggs), fruits, and veggies. i also take supplements such as fish oil and multivitamins, lift weights about 3-4 times a week and play ball on the weekends. for the most part, i'm very busy. i take 15 credits in school, have a full time job, and have various other hustles and hobbies. i'm out and about for a good part of the day.

am i naturally supposed to feel not as energized or some shit? what am i doing wrong? i felt MUCH better eating more carbs regularly.

I've noticed that some people simply do not respond well to low carb, and on the other hand you have me, I turn into a sluggish piece of shit if I eat a cracker.

I think its just a truth that no one diet works for everyone. If you guys are saying you truly tried low carb, gave it adequate time (3-5 weeks) and didn't see results and felt like ass, then you need to find something else because low carb isn't for you.

I have a theory that its related to genetics and location. I've talked to a few latino friends of mine who tried low carb (and yes I realize MiXX debunks this immediately lol) and they all said they felt terrible and didn't lose weight. Look back generations and you'll see a diet thats always been laden with carbs (fruits, legumes, corn, wheat, rice) Now compare that to my big Scandinavian ass, my people ate Reindeer, Fish, and Christians. Even back just a few generations I come from farming families, steak and eggs for breakfast kind of people.

Again ketosis is bad ! no one trying to develop a solid good looking physique ever goes into ketosis for a long period of time. It is an extreme form of weight loss.

A lot of carbs I see posted by some of you are junk carbs that is why you feel bad or add fat when you eat them. I also a majority of you are severely malnourished (hence your perceived results of fat loss)

eating constant protein / fat meals is NOT good. You body becomes acidic and over time catabolic. If you are just a regular dude who wants SUB-par results then be my guest and jump to extremes. Fat does not metabolize as efficiently as carbs. Fat is slow and requires a lot of energy from your body to break it down. This is NOT optimal for building muscle or achieving a high level of athleticism.

If you want to develop a good looking muscular physique read paleo diet for a fundamental approach to nutrition and lift heavy weights PERIOD

Eat your
veggies
fruits
nuts
seeds
beans
and in some cases minimal grains

along with your fats and proteins.

but there is no need to intentionally go into ketosis EVER.

Firstly, It seems, at least from your post, that you do a significant amount of endurance based exercises. Studies have shown that after 2-4 weeks your body adapts and that you should function as you normally should. However, this generally applies with endurance based activities.

Secondly, In my experience with ketogenic diets I realized that lifting heavy is exponentially more difficult without carbs. Also, forgive me if I am reluctant to believe that extra vitamins give you extra energy. Conversely, I know that B12 aids in cellular metabolism so maybe your body uses the vitamins to run more efficiently.

Cutting with 1,100 calories sounds as though you intend to put your hard earned muscles in a blender but if it works for you, then, by all means.

Mixx - every time I eat almonds, my stomach starts to swell and it looks like I am smuggling Brazilian soccer balls under my shirt. Can you explain this, please?

Was trying to find out if this had been answered already. Mixx: do you shed a lot of muscle mass with your tactic of draconian dieting?

I've put on decent muscle the past half-year. Am going to start shedding in two months, and I want to keep my PRs in weight-lifting.

A year from now you'll wish you started today

Nope. Rememebr, I don't just diet, I exercise with intensity lifting weights during 1 hour of high intensity training.

I do a whole routine with weights, jump rope, sprints, and push-ups, pull-ups, rowing machines. I complete entire sets of all of these exercises for 1hr maintaining my heart rate between 80% and 95% THE ENTIRE TIME!!! Unlike traditional gyms, a lot of guys REST for up to 10 minutes while working out. my recovery between exercises is ONLY 1 MINUTE USING A STOPWATCH!!!

With me it's not about "Go heavy or go home".

My mantra is "Go INTENSE, or don't show up!"

I Never lose muscle, I tone up muscles I have.

So, I am in ketosis, my muscle does not break down because I include resistance training at 85% HR, and my diet gets lean proteins form white fish. My body also gets 1 Gallon of water per day, so that my muscles can recover nicely!!

It does, but mostly energy. I say this because I use them, and I am on extreme ketosis, I posted a pic of my keto results.

For cellular metabolism, I use a MIC injection 2x per week.

Man... I'm impressed! Will definitely give it a shot. Could you do this for just a month before you started seeing results?

As in:

April-May: Get into decent cardiovasclular shape
May going forward: follow the Mixx routine and die

I wonder if this is what Jodie Marsh did?

I found Atkins to be VERY effective for a short span of time, especially if you've never done low carb before. Atkins magic seems to lessen the longer you're on it, and even when I"d spend a couple months off it and go back to eating <20g/carbs a day I never saw results like I did the first couple of months.

Chad, I'm curious:
  • 1. How long were you in actual Ketosis?
    2. What weeks did you see the most apparent results?
    3. When did you start seeing a decline in fat loss?
    4. How much fat gain after you went back to normal carbs? i.e Bread, rice, beans, etc

To me, it does. Although, I would like to know how you determined your maintenance calories as well as your deficit. I'm not trying to be antagonistic; I would simply like to know how you do what you do without losing muscle for I am also on a ketogenic diet.

1. Almost indefinitely I'd imagine. I literally ate as few carbs as humanly possible, some days not even breaking 10 grams.

2. Really started around the third week, stayed strong for the whole two months I was in hardcore Atkins induction

3. Around the 2 month mark. I would go back onto atkins after a month or so off and the process was roughly the same, good results from weeks 3-6 then a drop off. Now even Atkins induction doesn't drop weight off me that quickly

4. I never did. I dont eat bread, I think having flour out of my system so long as made me intolerant as I've tried to eat flour again and got nauseous and very bloated. My carbs come mostly from fruits and veggies now and even then I stay under 100g a day.

I lose Fat with hardly any muscle loss because I work with my bodies stats while I am under KETOSIS:

My Rest Metabolic Rate {2158} + Activity (Aerobic+ Anerobic+ sedentary) Calories at 80% HR {2503} = 4661

4661 Calories - 3500 (1lb of Fat) = 1161 <<-- MAINTENACE CALORIES!!

Now, a persn fasting on pure water will lose weight the same, but 60% of that is MUSCLE LOSS because they have not met their maintenance calories at 80% - 90% HR intensity training.

Never thought you were. I too was skeptical, until I tried this for a month shredded more fat than a McDonalds bathroom.

IT IS NOT EASY (repeat this 100x). It is an extreme workout and extreme discipline lifestyle only few psychos like me dare pull off. You must be on top of every single calorie, heartbeat, and second you workout.

The results are....well, mind-blowing!
