I understand what you're getting at, but by the same rationale that's like saying let drunk/drugged/raging dickheads have a free pass - since essentially, in that moment they're "unstable."
I won't let abuse toward myself or people I care about go unchallenged (within reason). What better lesson is there than being greeted with a black eye in the mirror to remind them of their idiotic ways. If their mental state translates to a higher chance of me being harmed, then so be it.
