"He went through the ladies like a hot knife through fudge” -- Ava Gardner.
Mickey Rooney died yesterday and I think he's due a tribute here even though his heyday came before most of our parents were born. Rooney set the bar for womanizing in Hollywood
Eight wives, nine kids, countless affairs. Screwed Ava Gardner before Sinatra did. What other Hollywood star dies at 93 and gets an article written on his...sex life??
Yes, he had fame game going for him. BUT... he stood a mere 5'2" and made a habit of not just dating the most beautiful women but the most beautiful taller women (Gardner was 5'7" for example). He could have let that major impediment mess up his life and his game, but apparently he either didn't care or spun it into an asset. He was the George Clooney of his day but with Seth Green's stature.
One interesting thing I noticed is that Rooney's exes aren't just the kind of women you say "Were beautiful in their time." Their pics look hot NOW. This guy, apparently, did not give anything below an 8 the time of day, at least in his prime. Here is a good article on all of this, and here are some nice visuals.
