I believe this particular reaction is instinctive and primal. Men want to fuck women, but they also have to protect women as well. It is genetically driven, not a socio-cultural phenomenon.
Now, think about these surviving women. Their lives are shattered by a double dose. First, they will have the survivor's guilt, and perhaps the accompanying PTSD.
But second, what man could possibly replace the man who laid down his life for her? No man can match up.
The probability of psychological ruination for them is quite high.
