In Shijiazhuang, they actually knocked on my door at 3 or 4AM. I'd heard many stories about foreigners getting middle of the night door knocks and knew what it was, so I didn't answer the door, and my visitor left without being too insistent. I wanted to see what she looked like, but figured it was better off not to even begin an interaction. Probably one of the desk clerks gets tipped for letting them know the room number. This was not in an international hotel, but a decent Chinese hotel, FYI
