I've no idea what is being compared, but none of it is fresh. Case in point - golden apples from France/Italy are light green and crisp everywhere in Europe, but yellow and soft in Russia. The only foods I've found reasonable are chilled ones like bananas, and non-perishables.
I haven't been to the US in a long time, but I've heard that a lot of the food is engineered and tasteless, so that may be what's being compared. Practically all foreigners I know complain about the quality of fruit/vegetables/meat/fish here.
