Another good thing about some STEM areas (like software engineering) is that the competition for jobs is not that fierce. While jobs in Accounting and Finance have much higher "salary ceilings", the competition is very fierce. In software engineering, a job posting may read like an employer wants someone with skills:
A,B,C,D,E and F
If the candidate has A,B,D and part of F....they still have a GREAT chance to get the job because there are not enough folks with ALL the skills (and looking)
