Right. More you go up north, better is the weather. Sao Luis de Maranhao in July/August is very enjoyable. In Belem, it's full summer season and Mosqueiro beaches are packed every weekend.
Talking about Sao Luis, the city is particularly busy in July because of the Bumba-meu-Boi celebrations - it's really a good period to visit this very nice and very enjoyable city which is totally out of the beaten tracks. BTW the pousada Portas da Amazonia is a wonderful boutique hotel that I strongly recommend - right in the middle of Projeto Reviver (the renovated old center), with many bars, restaurants ect around.
For those who are interested by a bit of eco-tourism in this region, the Lencois Marahense, near Sao Luis, are really worth the side trip. It is a kind of mini Sahara with azure blue water pockets separated by white sand dunes stretching about 150 km along the coast and about 60 km inland. A magic landscape, totally unexpected.
