I did Thailand solo. It worked out just fine. You make friends fast. Meet ppl on the streeet, tag along, integrate, dis-integrate, join other circles. Its like club-game on a city-scale. Spending some time even in huge BKK, you start running into similar expats, tourists, working girls. There aren't that many night-spots out for ppl to go out during the week (even San Francisco was like this). Its usually a rotating venue of 3-5 hot-spots for clubs/bars with- in each socio-economic strata/area and a core group of people who go out a lot, mixing w/some new blood .
W/Friends would be much better to help w/the mental grind. Its lonely on the grind alone at home. In a foreign country, its almost too much- language, poverty, prostitutes, drunk idiocy, mystery meats, etc etc.
Edit- Friday/Saturday is another beast. BKK Friday/Saturday is another level of ridiculous-ness.

WIA- For most of men, our time being masters of our own fate, kings in our own castles is short. Even those of us in the game will eventually succumb to ease of servitude rather than deal with the malaise of solitude
