Yes, I think this is the root of the problem, and other issues are really just a result of this imbalance - many guys fighting over a small pool of attractive women.
If you were only chasing fatties you would have it very easy. A real, genuine chubbychaser (since most of the proclaimed chubbychasers are just losers that can't do better and make virtue out of necessity) must have it very good in America.
