Ethiopia (intro thread)

Gondar, Ethiopia Data Sheet

TLDR: This is not worth a trip for any reason that I can fathom.

CULTURE & NIGHTLIFE:
- Men rule the world here and there are strict gender roles. Expect the women to do all the cooking and cleaning. Make the women sit in the other room at dinner.

- Lots of old European tourists passing through and going to Simien national park.

- Gondar is on an arms smuggling route with Sudan. Watch for unrest north and West of Gondar.

-Dating apps in Gondar are a waste of time. Don't even try.

- Language - mostly amharic and some english. Middle and upper class people tend to speak English.

- "Traditional" bars are good laugh and worth a visit for 2 drinks. Speaking of drinks imported alcohol is ridiculously expensive. Drink the beer.

- the bars are awful and mostly sausage fests. Don't plan plan on meeting any high quality women at these places.

-As the unemployment rate is high (25%), young women and men party whenever they feel like it. As a Westerner, you can make every night be a party if you want to. Bring a portable speaker and download music before you go. The Internet and Electricity is unreliable in Gondar.

-Like most other 3rd world countries everyone is going to attempt to rip you off. Stay alert, stay alive. Keep an eye on your valuables and keep them in your front pockets. There is plenty of petty crime.

-Meals are inexpensive - you can feed 2 adult men on $5 per meal including a few drinks. The food is standard Ethiopian fare and was almost identical at every restaurant that I visited. Western style breakfasts were disgusting and I quickly switched over to Ethiopian fare.

- Ethiopia is essentially a failed communist state with many policies that make growth impossible (e.g., No land ownership per se, all the big businesses are run by the government, all security is federal, etc.).

-Simean National Park is worth a visit, if you have any reason to go there. If you do go, I would highly recommend that you bring a satellite phone or hire Park Rangers to escort your deep into the park. This will cost you an extra 20 bucks and you will be able to go anywhere or do anything.

-Religion, mostly Christian with some Jews and Muslims thrown in the mix.

-Sights, old shitty Castles and churches that are worth a quick peak if you are in town. Watch out for scam artists at both trying to get you to pay fake fees and fake tours.

WHERE TO STAY & LOGISTICS:
When you get off the airplane buy a sim card for your phone with data. You will have to provide ID and foreigners are unable to secure unlimited plans. You can buy minutes everywhere to recharge your phone number.

The Goha Hotel is the nicest hotel in town overlooking the city. It also has the worst logistics. The nice thing about this hotel is that groups of women come to the hotel during happy hour for cocktails and to enjoy the great view. 30-80 Birr to get from town to the Hotel. 20-50 Birr can get you anywhere in town. Sunday and Saturday afternoons were the best for meeting women.

Apartments or hotels near the University or the University Hospital (split campus) are your best bet for meeting good looking ladies and have the best logistics.

Rent a car, or hire a driver or both. Find the best car you can find and rent it. This will elevate your status and give you a place to seal the deal if you are in a pinch.

GIRLS:
The quality of women in Gondar and is nowhere near the quality in Addis. The best girls are all at the Gondar University. The Goha Hotel and University are the best place to run day game.

Running game was fairly easy. I used mostly direct game and invited women to sit at my table or join me for a drink at a local bar/cafe/restaurant. Mini-dates were gold. I decided not to seal the deal with any of the girls because I couldn't bring myself to bang an Ethiopian 6/7. The reality is that the quality of Gondar women is quite low compared to Addis.
