If cash is not a big deal, you can get the best of both worlds.
I always stay on AirBnb now (used to be into hostels, but as mentioned before logistics suck).
BUT I'm thinking about a new strategy.
If you are arriving during a summer weekend and you know nobody in town, book a bed in a dorm for the first night so you have access to the hostel party. Now you have both rooms.
A bed in a dorm is no more than 10 or 15 bucks in most countries anyways, I can barely buy a beer for that kind of money where I live now.
Like this you access the party and get a social group to hit the bars, but when you meet a local you have your apartment. Doesn't work for hostel girls though, would be doing this only to start the night with a social circle.
I don't mind going out solo in a foreign city, but sometimes just feel like predrinking with someone on my first day.
