The Ideal Home Base City? - Beyond Borders - 12-12-2011

As a warning, I'm asking a lot in this selfish-ass thread. I realize what I'm
looking for is a tall order, but this is the only place I'd expect there to be a
chance some old school, international player knows exactly the place I"m
looking for, so I'm throwing it out there. I don't really expect that to
happen but it's worth a go...

So here it is:

I'm currently visiting "home" for the holidays and am at a turning point in my
life. For various reasons, I don't plan to ever move back to where I grew
up in Northern Cali, and at the moment I don't really have a home at all.

As much as I enjoy the mobility, not having a place to go back to is driving
me a little bit nuts, and I really want to settle in some place for a while
while I focus on my internet business to beef up the income and start
getting some money set aside for the future. Truth be told, I'm feeling a
little lost and want to get some footing.

I haven't traveled all the places I want to go though yet, so I don't really
know where to locate myself at. Maybe some of you guys with a little more
experience can throw in a few cents or tell me what your own idea of a
great home base would be.

I know there have been a lot of threads here that highlight great locations,
but I'm looking for a solid home base city rather than just a place to go
stay for a while and screw my brains out.

Here are some things I'm looking at in my ideal city:

1) By the Ocean

I am drawn to the ocean and can't see myself living permanently too far
away from it. Really into scuba diving and want to get into surfing, sailing,
and free-diving. So the ocean is a must.

2) Outdoorsy

Natural beauty is a big one for me. That kind of goes hand in hand with
ocean locations but it's worth pointing out.

3) Chicks that Vibe

If the women are not only high-quality but also like dark-haired white
dudes, that's a major plus. lol I realize that you can pull women anywhere
with enough game, and I do get laid everywhere I spend a decent amount
of time, but I want the hottest women around. [Image: smile.gif]

So call me crazy but I prefer to stack the deck in my favor...

I'm white but a lot of people mistake me for Italian and I've even had
people ask me if I'm Mexican in the states (usually when I sport a goatee).
Again, I'm down to work on my looks and game to pull women, but I still
don't mind walking into a place where I'm more than welcome. [Image: banana.gif]

I have a major thing for white-skinned Asian women, but before that I was
really attracted to latinas. I've never been to South America, but I have a
feeling I'd go apeshit crazy when I got there.

4) Medium-sized City

If you've ever been to Chiang Mai, Thailand, that's a great example of the
size of the city I want to be in. Enough to have a solid night scene with
classy clubs but not a claustrophobic mega-city like Bangkok.

5. Somewhat Affordable

I can raise my income to suit whatever location, but it would be a lot easier
to get my start somewhere where there's a lot of bang for my buck - no
pun intended.

6) About Town Culture (wine, fine dining, music scene, etc)

What can I say, I'm a fucking culture vulture. I like trendy venues, good
wine, scotch, fine cigars, and heading out on the town to a fancy dinner
dressed like I'm going to the damn prom. Call me corny, but it is what it is
- a city with international-level style & flair works for me.

7) Did I Say Wine?

I'd put it in my cereal if I could. A wine region is a serious plus.

8) Safe & Livable

By this I mean somewhat low crime and pollution, easy on the scams, and
most of all not too much resentment towards white dudes. If the world
economy keeps on going down the drain, I really don't want to be on the
scene if the locals decide to take it out on the white devils from abroad. lol

I've got the necessary street smarts to make it anywhere, but constantly
having to use them wears me down a bit sometimes.

9) Networking Possibilites

Is it possible to get through the red tape and do some business there?
Awesome. Other digital nomads present for networking? Great. The ability
to be accepted by local businessmen without having to worry about a
contract on your head out of jealousy would also be quite pleasant.

I don't need any of these things, per se, because I work online, but none of
them sound particularly unattractive either. [Image: smile.gif]

10) International Hub

Another major plus if it's easy to travel. I don't think I'll ever stop...

Again, a tall order I know, but I hope if anything this opens up some
discussion for what other people are looking for. If someone besides just
me gets something out of this, I'm fired up.

What would your ultimate home base be like?

Miami is the only place I can think of that fits that bill.

Hey Mixx - thanks a lot for the input and as a side note I always like reading your posts.

To be clear, I'm not against learning a new langauge at all. I picked up Thai pretty quick, and I'm thinking long-term, so....

San Diego. Maybe Charleston or Savannah. those are the only US cities I can think of.

Barcelona is a good one because then you have access to all European spots easily. I think Barcelona is the coolest city in Europe.

Damn, that's a big endorsement. [Image: smile.gif] I've always been intrigued by Barcelona. I went to a study abroad program in Switzerland one summer during uni, and we were supposed to spend a week in Barcelona but there was a problem with the school and they changed it to Sicily at the last minute.

Barcelona looks like a great locale, for sure though. Only worries are possibly a bit pricey and maybe too big for me. I'm just being a picky though, I imagine.

I met some cat that lived in a smaller city in Spain for a few years and ranted and raved about it - and he said it's real cheap there right now. I think I've got the name written down somewhere so I'll have to try to find it.

Great thread

Aside from the women and affordability, your current location (Norcal) sounds ideal.

By Norcal, I mean Eureka, CA. That's where I'm from. It's about 5 hours drive north of Frisco and is a shit place for young guys to spend their time.

There's just nothing here.

I see. San Fran is also a horrible place for young (straight) guys so you definitely have no reason to head south.

Yeah, I'm most likely heading back abroad after the holidays are over. I'm been in Southeast Asia for 4 years and not really big on living in the States. The only cities I could see myself living here are Portland or perhaps Honululu. Doubt I'll even bother as I don't have a lot of enthusiasm for the politics and the general direction of the country.

That's another conversation, I suppose...

I feel like picking up a copy of Dan Kennedy's "marketing to the affluent," printing out a copy of "Bang," and heading straight to marbella to swoop up a sugar mama.

And I'm talking saber-toothed tiger here.... [Image: banana.gif]

Marsailles?

It's difficult to choose

Sydney fits the bill fora lot your points. Outdoorsy aussie culture with lots of natural beauty in beaches and the beautiful Sydney Harbour. Along with girls who are definitely hotter than the average American, Brit or English speaking Canadian girl, great nightlife and definitely a big time international hub. Moreso than any American city bar NYC & L.A despite it's relatively small population (does 4.5 million people in it's metro count as medium?)

Sydney would be dope, but isn't it the 2nd most expensive city in the world? 3rd?

I met a couple really cool guys from there in Vietnam though, and one of them works in a major club there. They offered me a spot in their apartment. Haven't talked to them much since I left but still have the contact info and was thinking of taking them up on it.

Because I could see it being insane....
