Is Dilbert more ripped than you are? - not_dead_yet - 01-08-2015

The guy who draws Dilbert posted a shirtless selfie of himself today:

How did he do it?

I got this way gradually, over about ten years, by replacing willpower (which always failed) with knowledge. Now I eat everything I want whenever I want. I lost 28 pounds over time by eliminating my cravings in a simple, systematic way. The reason I can eat anything I want is that I no longer crave bad food. And healthy food is self-regulating in the sense that you rarely eat too much broccoli even if you like it.

None of this gain was possible even five years ago because science had so many things wrong about diet. I did what science told me to do twenty years ago and I slowly gained from about 135 pounds to 168 lbs. Once science started to get things right (I assume), I once again followed their lead and my body transformed back to about 140 pounds but with higher muscle content. I never looked remotely like this at a younger age. And it was effortless in the sense that I didn't suffer and I didn't need any real willpower.

I work out, obviously. But I never overdo it, which is an important part of my system as explained in the book. I do thirty minutes of light weights and thirty minutes of light cardio at most. I attempt to exercise daily and succeed about six days a week. Sometimes the exercise is just a long walk. I mix it up. I've never had a personal trainer.

In the old days I had to muster a lot of willpower to exercise. But thanks to my knowledge about the science of habits, I trained myself like Pavlov's dogs to look forward to it. I only exercise enough to feel good. Then I reward myself with a tasty protein shake and some downtime. If you don't look forward to exercise, you might be interested in how to rewire yourself in a similar fashion over time. It isn't much harder than hearing some new things for the first time. The change happens almost on its own.

Scott Adams is 57 years old. So what's your excuse?

That's pretty impressive for a 57 year old.

When you think about it, there is really no excuse for anyone human being to weigh more than 250lbs unless they are a professional athlete. Working in healthcare I see people on their rascal scooters bc they're too fat to walk. I've seen people who have had to been taken to the zoo because they are too big for the regular MRI machine. I've seen people over 500lbs. 95% of the time, its not a fucking thyroid problem, its a being a fat lazy fuck problem.

fat women are the worst. there are no ugly women, just lazy ones. if a chick has a meh face but a rockin body, her SMV is still high.

My father looked like that except more muscular till his mid 60s.

He's still in awesome shape now in his early 70s.

A lifetime of weight training and religiously watching what you eat goes a long way!

Eat right, work out. It 's not quantum science.

Most of us are still addicted to sugar and shit, and it is very difficult to quit/and or avoid these products...

By the way, what's up with all the apologizing and self-deprecating in his writing? Is the guy that insecure is it old(er) guy false modesty?

There's a huge gem in OP's post:

He writes Dilbert. The textbook on cubicle drone frustration, read by cubicle drones so they can have a moment of feeling that someone understands. He must have started out as one of them, but in the process, he became so successful that he's completely liberated from all that.

He must be weirdly conflicted in various ways. Interesting guy though.

The guy's writings on his blog are really interesting.

And he is more ripped than I am. An inspiration.

Does the title of this thread make anyone else chuckle every time they read it?

No (to thread question)...not even close.

But he's 25 years older than me.

Good question. It reads as pretty genuine. I guess we all have that "I'm so great" and "I'm so horrible" voices, he just writes more from the latter. It's just a persona.

Part of him wanted to brag by posting that pic, part of him was being the normal humble shy old man taking a risk to soft sell his book.

Part of him is self-deprecating and apologizing for bothering us to tell us about his book, part of him is taking on that persona to sound like me, a normal average dude, so he can sell his book.
