Someone sent me this video when we were discussing voices.
EDIt: Seems like I accidentally deleted a whole paragraph talking about voices, lol.

This [vocal fry] is a trend that began on Wall Street among women to help gain credibility in their industry.
Yes, because nothing helps one garner credibility like sounding more whiny and annoying.
I like how the news segment tries to portray women sympathetically (it's only because of the patriarchy! girl power!) but instead makes women look incredibly stupid with a highlight reel of vapid skanks and the implication that women have no idea how to gain credibility.
Or is Good Evening Nebraska a secretly red pill, subversive outlet?

I have encountered this plenty of times in the Midwest, though it was worse when kesha was popular.
If you want to go nuclear, here's a good line to use if you're talking to some girl at a party and she starts to piss you off with vocal fry-
*whip out two cigarettes*
"Hey, you got a light?"
"What? No! I don't smoke!"
"Well, shit, you sound like my great aunt's cancer kazoo. What was I supposed to think?"

"I don't know whether it's a question of wanting to sound more authoritative, more masculine or more attractive. I'm not a young woman so I can't say. Who knows how these things start."

"So maybe some people use it when they're relaxed and even bored, not especially aroused or invested in what they're saying."

My sister does this all the time, probably from hanging out with too many West LA JAPs at school.
