TLDR version:

Noted female feminist attends a conference hosted by the skeptic community, and talks about sexism and feminism. Afterwards, she attends after-conference party with attendees. She goes back to her hotel room at 4 a.m. On her way back, a guy from the conference hops in the elevator with her, telling her he thought she was interesting and politely asks if she wants to have coffee with him in his room. She declines. Later, she blogs about it briefly, talking about how the whole ordeal made her uncomfortable and demands that men don't do that to her.

Internet explodes w/ debate about this seemingly harmless encounter, and famed atheist Richard Dawkins throws in his two cents, saying that he thought her outcry was absurd as hell, considering there are far bigger things to worry about in the world. She and her army of white knights, militant feminists, and feminist enablers get pissed, and calls for a boycott of his books.

I had one big eyeroll going when I read that article. The guy in the elevator did nothing wrong. His only mistake was that the girl wasn't interested, but of course there's no way of knowing that unless he talked to her. When she declined, he respected her wishes and ejected. And then she talks about how the whole thing made her uncomfortable and shit. Give me a break. Bitch wants to dictate when, where, and how men flirt with her, and when she gets called out for it, she spews fire from her vagina. Unreal.

How would a woman from Spain, France or Italy have reacted in such a situation? She would have laughed and politely declined.

This jives with Roissy's commentary - the more alpha the men in a country, the more feminine the women behave. In the Anglosphere where men tend to be incredibly polite and deferential, the women tend to be hard and uptight. A minor indiscretion like this gets blown way out of proportion.

I recall watching an attempted pickup by some young Italian dudes spitting aggressive Mediterranean-style game ("you are very beautiful, come out with me") on some uptight American tourist girls. Hilarity ensued in watching the disaster unfold.  

In the Mediterranean, men catcall, leer, whistle and honk but the women are remarkably cool about it. In fact, it's pretty rare for a woman to be travelling alone with an iPod. In North America, every young woman's got on an iPod, a massive handbag, and those huge Paris Hilton bitch shades. The vibe given is "don't you dare come near me." Seems unwarranted when American/Canadian men are incredibly meek and far more passive than the average Italian man.

Fuck bitches like that. Welcome to EARTH. You're going to get approached and hit on, you can either adapt or die. It's like some of these women were living underground for 18 years.

I'm also assuming that the guy who made the approach was a fat D&D comic book nerd; what if he was a George Clooney lookalike running Danny Ocean game? Hell, what if it was a normal guy running solid game?

Why does bitch gotta do this anyways? The average girl (and this girl is painfully average) gets approached a few times a week at least (attractive girls are approached near-continually), and almost all the time they forget everything about the guy they brush off in a matter of minutes...why is she shaming this guy over her webcam feed because he made a clumsy approach? Is she approached so rarely that she doesn't know how to deal?

Dawkins' retort to her is hilarious, and I normally find him to be a pretentious douche.

Yeah, I remember that ruckus a month or so ago. She's your typical feminist that thinks being offended is the same as being raped. This is what is bothering a lot of men in America. You can't even innocently ask a girl for some coffee without her FREAKING OUT and acting like some kind of line was crossed. Is it really that big of a deal? At the very least, it's flattering.

On the other hand, Roissy had a good point about elevators being a bad place to try picking up. After all, the girl is stuck there with you, and has no escape until her floor, which might make her uncomfortable. Better to try your hand before getting on that elevator.

Also, even the slightest semblance of game might have made his approach seem less creepy.

I've never been to an skeptic/atheist convention but from what I've heard it is a 90-1 sausage fest. There are more women at a starwars convention than these places. Needless to say these dudes are not really interested in women and those that are interested have to be the most socially awkward dudes on the planet.

If you were an ugly chick then I could understand why you would go to such places but the price is that none of the guys there have any game at all.

Give the guy a break. She was probably the thinnest chick there.

I noticed this a ton in University; the most attractive women, while they parrot the 'I'm a Feminist!' lie, tended not to;

- Attend Women's Rights protests ("I can't protest tonight, I'm going to the bar!").
- Join advocacy groups ("The Hills is on!).
- Do anything at all to downplay their attractiveness (why would they?).

But what they did do was;

All this chatter about equal right and female empowerment is just that; chatter. The truth is, ALL women, not a vast majority or women, not 5/6 of women, all women have one dream; to marry a man of well enough means that she doesn't have to work and can sit at home and order around the help.

We have another one - now it is a feminist who went out on a date with a dude, and instead of getting excited that someone actually took THAT out for a date, she wrote a crappy post explaining her disgust that the dude was some card game player.

The Internet, however, paid back dearly. Insulting a bunch of geeks who know the technology is not a good idea, especially coming from a chick who is ugly as hell.
